OPSU Art Department

OPSU Art Department The OPSU Art Department was founded By J. Bryon Test and is all about CREATIVE CHAOS As the years passed, the Art Department grew.

In the beginning all of the art courses were held in a single room in OPSU's Hesper Hall. David Elder, Yvonne Sangster, Larry Wiggins, and Brent Shoulders (who was one of Bryon's first art students) became professors in the art department. In the years that Bryon has been head of the Art Department, it has grown through the faculty striving to make it a family-like environment, and the faculty alw

ays enjoys a good prank. The classes are now spread throughout Hesper Halls' bottom two floors with a lab on the third floor.

Thank you to Goodwell Public Schools for having us over yesterday for an afternoon of chalk art with some of their elementary classes.

We drew some large chalk outlines for the kids to jump into and make their own.

It is always good seeing kids get excited about making things and being creative.

Art Jubilee 2026 is officially wrapped, and it was a full day in the best way.

We welcomed nearly 200 high school students from across our region. From the start of the day through the final awards, there was a steady energy across campus.

A huge thank you to our featured artists, Yvonne Sangster and Jerry Bennett. Watching Yvonne’s pastel process unfold in real time was a highlight. It gave students a chance to watch how she brings her vibrant artwork to life. Jerry spent just as much time talking one-on-one with students as he did in his workshops. In his workshops he broke down character design and illustration in a way that students were able to follow along with him in real time.

So much of the day was made possible by our OPSU art students alongside alumni and guest artists. They were leading demonstrations, helping run competitions, curating the juried show, documenting the event, and supporting every part of the day from start to finish.

The closing ceremony felt like a true culmination of the day. As each school’s winners were announced, the room filled with cheering and support in a way that you could feel.

We’re grateful for everyone who made the trip to be here and be part of it.

If you attended and took photos, we would love to see them. Feel free to share in the comments!

'Twas the night before Art Jubilee…

The walls were all filled with artwork and care,
from artists and instructors who once started here.

The studios waited, the halls standing still,
the clay prepped and ready, the torches set to fill.

For now it is quiet, the campus at rest..
tomorrow, it’s chaos… but honestly, the best!

Art Jubilee is in TWO DAYS and we are so excited to introduce our featured artists this year! 🎨

Yvonne Sangster is coming back to OPSU! A retired OPSU art instructor, founding member of Artist Incubation, and a defining presence in the history of art at this university, Yvonne will be offering live pastel demonstrations throughout the morning for students to drop in and watch. Her work captures the essence of people, places, and emotion - and watching her work in person is something you do not forget.

We are also thrilled to welcome Jerry Bennett, an Oklahoma City based comic book illustrator whose work includes official art for Marvel, DC, Star Wars, and Disney. Jerry will be offering two interactive workshops during Art Jubilee - a character design session and a comics process session - both open to all students attending. Come ready to engage.

Art Jubilee is this Wednesday, April 15th. We cannot wait to see you there!
