This week, our B-Shift practiced a new method for making a rapid evacuation in a pinch using firefighter bailout systems.

Our firefighters continue training to ensure they’re ready to respond safely and effectively when the call comes.

In case you didn’t know, the GCFD is a Municipal Career Fire Department, which allows our crews dedicated time for ongoing training and full service to residents.

The more we train, the more prepared we are to protect our community, and each other.

The more you know. The more prepared you are.

🚔 Emergency Management Spotlight: Goose Creek Police Department 🚔

This week, as part of National Emergency Management Awareness Month, we’re proud to feature the Goose Creek Police Department (GCCPD) and the vital role they play within the City of Goose Creek’s consolidated Emergency Management Division.

During severe weather and other emergencies, GCCPD is there to help keep our citizens safe through coordination, access control, traffic mitigation, and public safety operations.

When power outages occur, officers may provide additional patrols in affected areas—especially when residents have been evacuated and alarm systems may be offline or malfunctioning. You may also see our officers at major intersections assisting with traffic control when traffic signals are out.

When trees are down, roads are blocked, or buildings have been damaged, GCCPD helps monitor these unsafe areas and works to keep residents and motorists away from potential hazards.

They also provide invaluable assistance to the Goose Creek Fire Department by identifying and reporting storm damage in areas that may be inaccessible to citizens, helping us get a clearer picture of what is happening throughout our community.

From routine operations to major emergencies, GCCPD is a 24/7 partner that stands ready to assist our citizens and every department across the City of Goose Creek.

We are proud to work alongside these dedicated men and women. Their commitment, coordination, and willingness to step up when our community needs them most are an essential part of keeping Goose Creek safe. 👮‍♂️🚒❤️

Emergency management is a team effort—and GCCPD is a critical part of that team!

☀️ Extreme Heat Safety Reminder

The City of Goose Creek Fire Department would like to remind everyone to take extra precautions during these extreme heat days. Today could quite possibly be the hottest day we’ve seen yet this summer! 🥵

If you have to be outside, work in moderation and take frequent breaks. Whenever possible, avoid prolonged outdoor activity—especially for those most vulnerable to extreme heat, including young children and older adults.

💧 Hydrate frequently and don’t wait until you’re thirsty.
🌡️ Watch for signs of heat exhaustion, which can quickly progress to heat stroke.
🌳 Take breaks in the shade or an air-conditioned space.
🐶 Don’t forget about our pets! They are vulnerable to extreme heat too. Make sure they have plenty of fresh water, shade, and never leave them in a parked vehicle.

Please look out for yourself, your family, your neighbors, and your four-legged friends. Stay cool, stay hydrated, and stay safe, Goose Creek! ❤️‍🔥🚒

The City of Goose Creek Fire Department wants to share some School Transportation Safety Tips to help ensure every student gets to and from school safely.

🚶 Walkers

Use sidewalks when available; if none, walk facing traffic.

Stop and look left, right, left before crossing.

Make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the street.

Stay alert—no distracted walking.

🚲 Bike Riders

Ride with traffic, single file.

Stop before crossing and walk bikes across.

Wear a properly fitted helmet and bright clothing.

Stay alert—no headphones or phone distractions.

🚌 Bus Riders

Stand at least 6 feet from the curb.

Wait for the bus to stop completely before boarding.

If crossing in front of the bus, stay 10 feet ahead so you and the driver can see each other.

🚗 Drivers & Teen Drivers

Obey school zone speed limits and drop-off procedures.

Never pass a stopped school bus.

Practice with teen drivers regularly.

Be a role model—drive the way you want them to drive.

Let’s make sure the first day of school starts with safe travels for everyone! Have a great First day tomorrow!!

🚨 BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY ALERT from the City of Goose Creek Fire Department! 🚨
With schools returning tomorrow, we want to take a quick moment to remind everyone in our community about a crucial safety topic: When to stop for a school bus.
Let's work together to keep our students safe on South Carolina roadways. Here is a quick refresher on the law:
🛑 TWO-LANE ROADS:
If you are on a two-lane road, vehicles traveling in BOTH directions must come to a complete stop when a school bus has its red flashing lights activated and stop arm extended.
🛑 MULTI-LANE ROADS (4 or more lanes):
If you are on a multi-lane highway, ONLY vehicles traveling BEHIND the bus (in the same direction) are required to stop. Vehicles approaching a stopped school bus from the opposite side may proceed with caution.
A few extra reminders for tomorrow morning:
* Never pass a stopped school bus that is actively loading or unloading children—it isn't just dangerous, it carries heavy fines and points on your license.
- Watch for children walking or biking to school, especially where there are no sidewalks.
- Give yourself a little extra commuting time tomorrow as traffic patterns adjust to the new school year.
Help us ensure every student has a safe start to the year. Stay safe, Goose Creek! 🚒🚑

🚜🌳 Emergency Management Spotlight: Department of Public Works 🌳🚜

As part of National Emergency Management Awareness Month, we’re proud to highlight one of our key partners in keeping Goose Creek safe—the City of Goose Creek Department of Public Works (DPW).

While you may know them for maintaining our parks, buildings and city infrastructure, DPW plays a critical role in emergency management. Working hand-in-hand with the Goose Creek Fire Department and other city agencies, they help prepare our community before storms arrive and respond quickly once severe weather has passed.

From clearing storm drains and reducing potential hazards before a storm, to removing fallen trees, clearing roadways, and assisting with damage mitigation afterward, DPW is an essential part of our emergency response team. Operating under the City’s Emergency Management program, their dedication helps ensure our community is ready for whatever comes our way.

Emergency preparedness is truly a team effort, and we’re grateful for the hardworking men and women of DPW who work behind the scenes to keep Goose Creek moving—before, during, and after the storm.

Thank you, DPW, for all you do for our community! 👏🚒🚜

🚒🎉 Is Ladder 3 excited? You bet it is! 🎉🚒

August is National Emergency Management Awareness Month, and the City of Goose Creek Fire Department is excited to give you a behind-the-scenes look at the work that goes into keeping our community safe every single day.

Emergency management is about much more than responding to disasters—it’s about planning, preparedness, coordination, and working together before, during, and after emergencies. Under the leadership of our City Emergency Manager, Chief Mike Nixon, the Goose Creek Fire Department partners with city departments, public safety agencies, and community organizations to ensure we’re ready for whatever comes our way.

Throughout the month, we’ll be sharing how emergency management works, the planning that happens behind the scenes, and ways you and your family can be better prepared for emergencies.

Stay tuned as we take you behind the scenes and highlight the teamwork, training, and planning that help make the City of Goose Creek a safer place to live, work, and play.

Together, we’re prepared. Together, we’re stronger. 💙❤️
