As the season of Autumn comes upon us, I think of the tree’s changing, and fear in the air. No, not because of Halloween, but because this was the time of year, I think my s*xual abuse began. Coming home from school like any other child, but being violated by someone I knew and trusted. “Child s*xual abuse is real and affects 1 in 10 children before they reach adulthood.”(CDC)
As a young girl, I loved to talk and sing. I use to say I wanted to be a singing Doctor. But as happy and talkative as I was, many people didn’t know the inner struggles of insecurity, sorrow, fear and dirtiness, I was experiencing. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and it was domestic violence that made me afraid to tell. I watched my mother struggle to defend herself in a domestic violence relationship with a woman, who called me her own daughter. How was I supposed to tell my mother that her girlfriend was molesting me, when she was having her own physical battles?
My mother asked me all of the time, “Is any man trying to touch you? Did any of those boys try to touch you?” My response was, “no”. Parents I want you to talk to your child and explain to them that no matter the age or s*x of the person, their body is sacred and no one has the right to touch them. No matter how helpless they may feel or how much fear the person tries to put on them, It’s ok to get help.
