The Gorham Fire Department responded to 13 calls for service throughout Sunday, April 12- the most significant being an outside fire that extended to two structures.

Around 1 pm, the Cumberland County Regional Communications Center received a 9-1-1 call from a property owner reporting a controlled burn had quickly gotten out of control and was threatening two buildings on the property. Gorham Fire Department personnel arrived within 5 minutes of the call to find a rapidly spreading grass/brush fire with extension to two buildings.

While burning a total land area of approximately 200'x200', damage to one structure was minor, and damage to another was moderate but limited to the exterior. Gorham Fire Department personnel were assisted at the scene or with station coverage by firefighters from Buxton, Standish, Windham, Hollis, and Westbrook. The fire was contained in less than 10 minutes and units remained on scene for about two hours. The Maine Forest Service responded to investigate the fire.

The Gorham Fire Department would like to remind our followers that open burning requires a permit- additional information can be found here: https://apps1.web.maine.gov/burnpermit/public/index.html

Statement from Maine State Fire Marshal regarding the suspicious fire on Tow Path Rd. Yesterday afternoon.

FMO Investigating Suspicious Fire in Gorham

On Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at approximately 2:55 pm, the Gorham Fire Department was dispatched to 23 Towpath Road for a reported structure fire. Upon arrival, fire crews observed heavy smoke and fire showing from the left side of the structure. The residence was uninhabitable, boarded up, and had not been occupied for several years. The structure was isolated, with no nearby residences or exposures. No injuries were reported. The Gorham Fire Department, with assistance from the Windham Fire Department, conducted fire suppression operations and successfully contained and extinguished the fire. There was no electrical service to the structure, and no damage occurred to surrounding properties or structures. Circumstances surrounding the fire were deemed suspicious. As a result, the Gorham Fire Department requested assistance from the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office to conduct a fire investigation. Investigators are working in coordination with the Gorham Police Department Detective Division. The investigation remains ongoing, with follow-up efforts underway. During the scene examination, it was observed that although the residence had been boarded up, one of the boards covering a front window appeared to have been pulled down, and one of the boarded entry doors showed signs of forced damage. Investigators are asking residents in the area who have security or surveillance cameras to review their footage for any activity that may be relevant to the investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
