The Orange County Sheriff's Office, in collaboration with the Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM), organized a specialized training session aimed at combating antisemitism. Law enforcement personnel from various counties were trained to recognize antisemitic symbols and coded language. It is increasingly vital to address antisemitism and ensure the safety of residents in Orange County.

Hanif Inman recently completed a three-month internship at the Sheriff's Office, but his association with us extends far beyond that. As a former Building Bridges graduate, Hanif has consistently been a strong supporter of our office.
We hope you gained valuable experience during your time here at OCSO, and we wish you success in fulfilling your dream of becoming a Deputy Sheriff!

September is National Recovery Month, a time to raise awareness about mental health and substance use disorders.

Addiction is a significant issue in our community. Deputies witness its impact weekly in homes, through emergency calls, in the jail, and within the court system. The message is simple: substance use disorder is a health condition, prevention works, treatment is effective, and recovery is possible.

Our goal is to provide better information to families before a crisis leads to an overdose, an arrest, or a tragedy.

Sheriff Arteta was honored to stand alongside educators, community leaders, law enforcement officials, students, and residents at the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the Newburgh Free Academy Career and Technical Education Center.

This new facility features incredible state-of-the-art classrooms, equipment, and specialized industry labs that will empower students to explore their interests and discover their strengths. Whether in criminal justice, auto body work, construction, or culinary arts, students will have opportunities to learn and grow.

The relationships among students, educators, law enforcement, and families are essential for the success of our young people!

More residents are taking advantage of electric bicycles, or e-bikes, as a convenient and efficient way to get around.

Sheriff Arteta reminds residents of the importance of knowing and understanding the laws and safety expectations while on The Heritage Trail.

You may notice an increased presence of Deputies along the trail in the coming weeks. They will be there to engage with cyclists, answer questions, and provide education on the rules and regulations.

Our goal is to help ensure the trail remains safe and enjoyable for everyone!

As the new school year approaches, we are excited to welcome 9 School Security Deputies to our team!

Managing over 60 part-time deputies across 26 schools in 8 school districts in Orange County is no small task. Therefore, we are pleased to have Sergeant Brian Kelly serving as the School Security Division Supervisor. He has educated, instructed, and trained deputies to collaborate with school staff in creating a secure and welcoming environment that fosters learning and growth.

"Ensuring the safety of our schools is a top priority, and we are committed to providing highly trained professionals to maintain that security," said Sheriff Arteta.

Each School Security Deputy (SSD) is a certified law enforcement officer who has chosen to continue their service by working part-time to safeguard our schools. These individuals are more than just security personnel; they are seasoned professionals who bring years of experience, training, and a strong commitment to public safety.

On Friday, August 21st, we had the honor of attending the memorial service for fallen Police Officer Jason Conklin, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty 29 years ago while serving the residents of Orange County.

Officer Conklin was a beloved son, brother, and uncle, and his service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Sheriff Arteta and members of the Sheriff’s Office will always keep Jason and his family in our thoughts and prayers.

A special thank you to the members of FOP Lodge 957 and President Michael McGinn for continuing to honor Officer Conklin and keep his memory alive.

We are excited to announce the successful completion of the second class of the Success Map Initiative’s Business Bootcamp at the Orange County Correctional Facility. Over the course of four weeks, participants gained practical skills in business planning, finance, marketing, and the essential systems needed to take charge of their lives. Additionally, participants have the opportunity to continue their development with 12 months of post-release coaching, offering them a second chance to enhance their skills in education, seize new opportunities, find purpose, and plan for the future.

This is just one of the several new programs that Sheriff Arteta has introduced to provide an avenue toward a career path rather than recidivism.
