A reminder for an easy way to send some encouragement…
While waiting for communities to be fully “reopened”, why not use some of your downtime to create drawings and/or notes of encouragement to include in the food deliveries as part of the collaboration between RECAP and the Orange County Government's Office of the Aging Senior Dining and Meals on Wheels programs for homebound seniors and neighbors?

During this extended time of people needing to self-isolate, you can help lessen the feeling of isolation, with cheerful drawings, cards, and letters from kids (and adults).

Letters can be mailed to:

We’re Back!
Today was an exciting time for the Youth Bureau staff as we have transitioned back to our office space after working remotely for 11 weeks!

We would like to take this moment to give an extra special “shout out” to the AMAZING team that worked behind the scenes to help our department keep things moving forward while working remotely. We certainly could not have been so productive if not for the patience, flexibility, and creativity of the Orange County Government's Department of Information Technology! 💻

The County’s IT Department is comprised of a staff of computer professionals and business analysts that support all County computer technology and data information needs by identifying business problems and implementing solid cost-effective solutions.

Thank you to Commissioner James Burpoe and his dedicated staff who have help us in so many ways these past few weeks – and throughout the year! 👏

Steve & Robert: for all their help in setting up our remote workstations while working from home – and then setting up our new (more portable) workstations to help both during COVID-19 response and beyond!

Lane: for assisting with more programmatic aspects, like establishing the support needed for hosting online meetings

Sue & Karen: for being our website gurus and helping us to find the most efficient way for us to share videos online

Help Desk Staff: for always being there to support us with any tech issues that arise

We greatly appreciate all that you do to help us be able to support the organizations that run programs for children, youth, and families!

YOU Can Help Get Youth Counted!
An accurate count of youth (up to age 21) is needed for the formula used to distribute funding through the Youth Bureau system.

It has a direct impact on funding amounts distributed to local programming for children, youth, and families! Types of programs infused with Positive Youth Development principles include: Afterschool and academic help, work readiness, youth leadership & civic engagement, mentoring, recreation, mental health support, teen dating violence prevention, homeless youth shelter, substance abuse prevention, parenting education, and more!

Visit https://ocfs.ny.gov/main/youth/ for more information about the NYS Office of Children & Family Services role to Youth Bureaus and funding.

For additional information about the Youth Bureau system and to connect with the Youth Bureau in your area, check out the Association of NYS Youth Bureaus at https://anysyb.net.

DON'T DELAY - COMPLETE IT TODAY!
It'll take you less than 10 minutes to respond online at: https://2020census.gov/en/ways-to-respond.html or over the phone: 844-330-2020.

Who’s most at risk of not being counted? Children ages 0-4! Not counting this age group affects school planning and funding for the next ten years. Fill out your Census online at https://2020census.gov/ so that you can count all members of your household! Photo: Shutterstock

We are excited to provide links to 2 different online sessions that address the "Basics for How to Host Effective Online Meetings" and "How to Actively Engage Program Participants Online". Please visit https://www.orangecountygov.com/1963/Webinars.

Participants from the live version included Orange County Youth Bureau funded programs, Orange County Libraries, and members of the Association of New York State Youth Bureaus.

We appreciate that these trainings were developed as a response to the COVID-19 health crisis and the need to work and run programs remotely. They were intentionally set up in a way to remain a valuable resources “beyond” the crisis.

Thanks to the generous support of The Accelerator, Powered by the Orange County IDA and WEDC-Women's Enterprise Development Center
, these online trainings were provided at no cost to participants!

Thinking Back Thursday…
It’s hard believe that just this past fall, over 300 attendees from Youth Bureaus, Runaway Homeless Youth programs, afterschool programs, and a variety of other youth and family serving organizations from around the State gathered (in person) for the 2-day 49th ANNUAL YOUTH DEVELOPMENT TRAINING CONFERENCE hosted by the Association of New York State Youth Bureaus and the Coalition for Homeless Youth.

Orange County was strongly represented with 5 workshops presented by local experts: Warwick Valley Community Center (including youth leaders), 12th Rock Sports, Orange County Human Rights Commission, Maternal Infant Services Network, and a Multi-Disciplinary Team consisting of Orange County Government's Department of Social Services, Fearless Hudson Valley, Inc. (formerly Safe Homes of Orange County), HONOR A Friend’s House, Merakey’s Center for Hope, and the City of Newburgh Police Department.

Taking time to remember this Memorial Day...🇺🇸

Memorial Day provides an opportunity to remember the men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the freedoms we all enjoy each and every day in America and here in Orange County. We remember and honor them all, whether they served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War, or recent battles in Iraq and Afghanistan, or other conflicts. On Memorial Day, I ask that you take time with your family and friends to remember the sacrifices of the fallen.

County Executive Steve Neuhaus and Veterans Service Agency Director Christian Farrell joined members of the Nam Knights’ Orange County chapter to place American flags on more than 3,000 graves at the County’s Veterans Memorial Cemetery on Friday. The cemetery always looks very dignified during the Memorial Day weekend thanks to the work of the dedicated cemetery staff and the help of volunteers such as the Nam Knights who make sure every grave is marked with an American flag.

We appreciate the staff at HONOR for providing structure and support to youth at A Friend's House at this extra stressful time for families and throughout the year. 😃

A Friend's House is supported by Orange County and New York State Office of Children and Family Services funding through the Orange County Youth Bureau and the Orange County Departments of Social Services and Mental Health.

“A Friend's House” provides temporary shelter for homeless and runaway youth 17 and under. It is the only one of its kind in Orange County. In 2019 we were privileged to have provided a safe haven for 143 youth. We are so proud of the work that goes on within our walls and the people who who serve these precious children.

The Orange County Youth Bureau's Youth Program Tech Michael Bark and Executive Director Rachel Wilson were excited to stop by the City of Middletown, NY Recreation Center to continue the #thankitforward campaign by showing appreciation for the hard work and dedication of the Middletown Recreation & Parks Department and the City of Middletown Police Department- NY. 👏

Superintendent for Recreation and Parks – and OCYB Advisory Board member – Christine Brinckerhoff (a.k.a. Brink) and Police Officer Beebe were on hand to accept the sign presented by the OCYB through the partnership of The Alcoholism & Drug Abuse Council of Orange County, the Orange County STOP DWI & Traffic Safety Program, and the Mid-Hudson Prevention Resource Center.

During the visit, Brink showed off their food pantry stocked with dry goods, milk, eggs, paper products, and diapers to include in the many care packages they deliver to the front doors of their neighbors in need. This is just a sampling of the outreach efforts on behalf of the City of Middletown, in partnership with the Middletown School District, to keep families and seniors cared for during this time.
