MILTON, ONT — World champion Loua Dipa returned to Woodbine Mohawk Park off a defeat in her debut to rip a 1:48.3 mile and win the last of three $35,000 Fan Hanover eliminations – a Grade 1 Stake for 3-year-old pacing fillies – on Saturday night at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

Sliding into fourth approaching a :27 first quarter, Loua Dipa gathered steam for the backstretch and hustled after leader A Clean Deal as she maintained speed into a :54.1 half. Loua Dipa stretched forward to grab the lead from A Clean Deal moving for the far turn and breezed past three-quarters in 1:20.2. She muscled through the stretch and held a healthy advantage to the finish to stride in a 2-3/4-length winner over Daya, who skimmed the pylons to grab second from A Clean Deal.

“She’d been real sharp qualifying,” said Wrenn when asked whether he was concerned about Loua Dipa’s last race being a month ago. “Nothing surprises me with her, but she put in a game effort and beat a couple of really nice fillies in there so I was proud of her. She definitely grew up a little bit and they changed her bridle, but she feels like her old self. She was awesome tonight.”

Loua Dipa, a homebred daughter of Sweet Lou, won for the 10th time from 15 starts in her career and padded her bankroll to $1,174,788 for owners Burke Racing Stable LLC and Weaver Bruscemi LLC. The Ron Burke trainee paid $3.20 to win.

Tony Beaton’s undefeated Perfect Sting filly Be Perfect BG trounced her peers under no urging to post a 1:48.4 effort in the second Fan Hanover elimination.

Driver Dexter Dunn eased Be Perfect BG, the 1-5 favorite, towards the lead out of post 6 and smoothly cleared pylon-starter Easy Station to a :26.4 first quarter. Be Perfect BG grabbed a slight breather to a :54.4 half and rolled steadily through the turn with Easy Station anxiously tracking Dunn’s helmet. However the favorite faced no trouble after three-quarters in 1:22 as she peeled away in the stretch for a 2-1/4-length win under wraps over Easy Station and Sangria Summer in third.

“She did everything that was asked of her last year and in impressive fashion,” Dunn said after the race. “Obviously had a good break – I think that probably really helped her. Just looking at her physically, she really bulked up this year and she’s come back better than ever. She was doing it pretty easy. We came to three-quarters and she started to pick the tempo up herself. She’s a real racehorse; she really wants to do it.”

Be Perfect BG has now won nine straight from nine starts in her career and banked $343,318 for owners Gaston Bibeau, Gestion Eric Bibeau Inc. and Ecurie CSL. She paid $2.30 to win.

The first elimination saw a surprise with odds-on favorite Topville Lucky toppled by a furious charge down the center of the track from Perfect Thought to score the win in a 1:49.3 mile.

Lavender Seelster launched for the lead to a :26.2 first quarter and settled into the backstretch as the two favorites began a brush for the front. Seaside Charm led the charge and cleared command while Topville Lucky steadily ground forward and eventually crossed to the lead after a :54.1 half. All the while driver James MacDonald angled Perfect Thought into a second-over position nearing three-quarters in 1:21.4 and started fanning towards the center of the track. Seaside Charm took a shot out of the pocket after Topville Lucky as she labored for home before she plateaued. Perfect Thought hit top gear once the top pair tired and swooped to the lead with ease and crossed the beam a winner by 1-3/4 lengths. Lavender Seelster zipped through a seam at the inside for second while Jen Tilly kicked from last for third.

Coming into the Fan Hanover, Perfect Thought’s last race came nearly a month ago after she scratched from the New Jersey Sire Stakes final. On the scratch, MacDonald said “She’s a filly and unpredictable weather in the year; it was just a case she tied up. But Scott [Zeron] and Megan [Scran] have done such a great job with her. She was coming into the race really, really good and I was fortunate enough to get on her at the right time. She felt like a million dollars and I saw she was always charging late, but I moved her over and she just jumped forward. Hopefully she can bring her ‘A’ game next week.”

Harry Poulton trains Perfect Thought, a daughter of Perfect Sting, for owner Thestable Perfect Thought. She won her first race of the year from three starts and her fifth race from 13 starts in her career, earning $297,274. Off the fourth choice in the betting, she paid $24.40 to win.

Odds On Mr Mamba, Sweet Lovin Lou Victorious in North America Cup Eliminations

MILTON, ONT — World champion Odds On Mr Mamba shipped north from Indiana and vanquished the unbeaten Beau Jangles while Sweet Lovin Lou stoutly powered first over to give driver James MacDonald a difficult choice after he guided both to victories in the pair of $50,000 Pepsi North America Cup eliminations on Saturday night at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

MacDonald worked a covered trip for Odds On Mr Mamba and exploded with fervor down the grandstand side to land the win in his North America Cup elimination in a 1:48.2 mile.

Melillo looped after his stablemate Ubrute rushing into a :26.2 first quarter and grabbed the lead, but Gentlemans Club soon swung out of third and swept to the front as the field rolled up the backstretch. Beau Jangles, the 2-5 favorite, gapped in fourth but received the cue from driver Bob McClure to attack past three-eighths and moved through the gears to hit top speed into a :54.1 half. Brandon Blvd tracked the favorite through the turn with Odds On Mr Mamba perched third over.

Beau Jangles blitzed Gentlemans Club rounding the last turn but failed to clear to the lead. He held a head up on Gentlemans Club past three-quarters in 1:21.1 while Brandon Blvd fanned three wide and Odds On Mr Mamba unwound even wider spinning for home. Beau Jangles inched by Gentlemans Club while Brandon Blvd and a drifting Odds On Mr Mamba burst past the inside pair to battle for the lead late. Brandon Blvd dug in on a straight line but failed to stave Odds On Mr Mamba’s momentum late in a neck decision on the finish. Beau Jangles held third with Melillo and Redland Rocket Man securing the last berths into the final.

“I just wanted to get myself into a good spot turning for home where I could let him do his best work, whether that was too far back or whatever,” MacDonald, who picked up the drive on Odds On Mr Mamba when Dexter Dunn opted for Brandon Blvd, said after the race. “They told me what a kick he had and Dexter said the same thing, so I thought if I could be second, third over it would work out great. In the first turn I was happy to get Dexter in because I thought Beau [Jangles] move back to the lead. It worked out amazing tonight. A lot of times when they run out like that down the lane, they usually can't get there, they lose the competitive raciness because they don't have someone right beside them. I know I'm confident they'll get them straightened out for next week.”

Trainer Melanie Wrenn said picking James MacDonald to drive Odds On Mr Mamba was “a pretty easy decision. James is a great driver, and his home turf, the whole nine yards. How could we go wrong? And plus, we had one start, and ‘Mamba’ is probably better off the pace like that, and we didn't really want to be in the hunt, so we knew that James would do the right thing.”

And despite the long-awaited matchup against Beau Jangles coming inside the North America Cup elimination, MacDonald also said that “I think it's going to add more to the race, some people look at it as Beau Jangles not being undefeated anymore, but I think we've learned over the years champions bounce back. And I think for Beau Jangles, Doc Moore will have him amazing, Bob will drive him perfect, and it's going to be a heck of a horse race.”

A homebred Odds On Equuleus gelding for Dana Parham’s Odds On Racing, Odds On Mr Mamba stayed unbeaten from two starts this year and won his ninth race from 10 starts in his career, earning $528,219.

“He's grown a bit, but he's still not a big horse, but he has a huge heart, and he just wants to do it,” trainer Melanie Wrenn said after the race. “He did everything perfectly. He didn't miss a meal. He shipped fantastic. It wasn’t a problem.”

Sent the second choice in the betting, Odds On Mr Mamba paid $7.40 to win.

Odds-on favorite Sweet Lovin Lou cruised uncovered into the last turn and persisted to overhaul tiring horses in the first North America Cup elimination in 1:48.2.

Following a recall to repair a broken overcheck on Al Papi, Al Papi blasted off the starting car to take the lead through a :26.3 first quarter. He pocketed No Waitlist heading into the backstretch with pylon-starter Superchamp Hanover following in third and Sweet Lovin Lou landing into fourth. Al Papi motored to the half in :54.1, at which point driver James MacDonald tipped Sweet Lovin Lou off the pylons from fourth and advanced on the outside while Al Papi continued to speed towards three-quarters in 1:20.4. Sweet Lovin Lou lunged forward as the pace flattened into the stretch and spurted away under a hand drive to a 1-1/4-length victory over a game Al Papi in second. Azrael Blue Chip rallied from second over for third ahead of an even No Waitlist while Lindy Dragonwater secured the last spot into the final.

“Dan [Lagace] did a great job training him down and we just kind of brought him along each start,” driver James MacDonald said after the race. “Raced him off the pace, last week [in the Somebeachsomewhere] he was closing again and I thought tonight he was ready to do a little work and he showed he was. I just kind of rode out there first over – last year he’d get a little rolly in the turns, but he was flawless tonight. Dan did a great job, smoothed him out, had him perfect so that made my job easier. I just coasted up to the lead and when I called on him at the top of the stretch he just exploded.”

A c**t by Sweet Lou, Sweet Lovin Lou nabbed his first win of the season in his third start and his fourth win in his career from 12 starts, earning $312,317 for owners Lagace Stables, Edwin Buhler, Big Als Stables and Brittany Farms Micki Rae. The victory lowered Sweet Lovin Lou’s lifetime mark by over two seconds.

“He’s always showed the speed, he’s just been mature – he actually turns 3 tomorrow,” trainer Dan Lagace said after the race. “We spent all winter and his first couple of races just try to teach him to relax, to settle, and James has done a great job. He’s the same way as last year. His hopples are four inches longer, but other than that he’s the same. We had him in an open [bridle] all winter just to teach him that it’s okay to relax and settle. Chasing good horses for a long season and being immature, when you’ve got someone like James in your corner and he’s teaching them and letting them finish strong, you can’t ask for anything better.”

Sent the 3-5 favorite, Sweet Lovin Lou paid $3.20 to win.

‘AMERICAN’ DISPLAYS LASTING POWER AT BIG M

By Dave Little, Meadowlands Media Relations

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – Taking advantage of a rated first half, American Power pulled off an upset Friday night at The Meadowlands, defeating two big-time, headline-grabbing Hambletonian contenders in the featured $25,000 second leg of the New Jersey Sire Stakes for 3-year-old c**t and gelding Platinum-level trotters.

Mega Shark had the lead at the quarter in :28.1 before American Power surged past that one to take the field of 11 past the half in an underwhelming :57. Just before the half, Diabolic Hill, the even-money second choice who is No. 4 on Ken Warkentin’s Road to the Hambletonian Top 10, vacated the five-hole to go after the leader uncovered. Apex, the 4-5 favorite who is top-ranked, picked up that cover as American Power went by three-quarters in 1:25.4.

But a first-over trip wasn’t going to cut it for Diabolic Hill, and Apex, who gapped his cover around the far turn, saw his rally nearing the wire fall short. Apex finished second with Diabolic Hill a tired third as they both made their seasonal debuts.

It was no sweat for trainer Marcus Melander. His horses finished 1-2, and while Dexter Dunn handled Apex, American Power did just fine with Mattias Melander, Marcus’ brother.

“The New Jersey Sire Stakes final is next for this horse,” said Mattias of the Hambo eligible. “And then we’ll take it from there.”

A superbly bred c**t by Walner-Ariana G, American Power completed the mile in a lifetime-best 1:52 to win by a safe neck. He has won all three of his starts this season and returned $30.80 to win as the 14-1 third choice in the wagering.

LADIES’ NIGHT: In addition to Debbie Little (the associate editor and columnist at Harness Racing Update) and Meadow Twaddle (Marketing Director of The Meadows Standardbred Owners Association) serving as host and co-host, respectively, of the live simulcast presentation, there were also a pair of $25,000 Platinum-level New Jersey Sire Stakes dashes for 3-year-old trotting filles on the card.

Naked And Famous (Six Pack-Sleep Tight My Luv) won the first division of the second leg in ultra-impressive fashion. The Noel Daley trainee surged past leader Days Away at the half before trotting her back half in :55.1 to stop the clock in a lifetime-best 1:51.1. Driven by Todd McCarthy, she broke in last when in tight heading to the half as the favorite in the Oak Grove Oaks final, one week after establishing a track-record of 1:51.2 in her elim. As the 3-5 favorite, she returned $3.40 to win.

The second division went to the Jason McGinnis-trained, Anthony MacDonald-driven Jailbird Jog (Tactical Landing-Miss Don Fanucci S), who made the lead at the half in :56 before a trotting a back-half in :55.4 to complete a 1:51.4 lifetime best. The Oak Grove Oaks winner scored for the third time this year in four tries and paid $5.40 as the 8-5 second choice.

DEBBIE’S MONSTER DOUBLE: Hall of Famer Little, who was filling in for her husband, Dave, made her presence felt in a big way.

Debbie, who was a handicapper and writer for the New York Post for 27 years before getting her gig at HRU, showed no rust as a track tout, giving out seven winners on the card.

In addition, she absolutely crushed it late, as she used a 1-2 favorite (best bet Wishuponastar Deo) in the 14th race as a single to go along with a 50-1 bomb in the finale (Ms Frances Assisi, one of two horses she included) to make a gigantic score.

Her “Little’s Late Double” called for an investment of $40, and those who played along cashed in for a segment-record $868, a profit of $828, after cashing their $20 base bets on the $86.80 payout.

A LITTLE MORE: Jason Bartlett led the driver colony with three winners. … All-source handle on the 15-race card totaled $2,579,871. … Racing resumes Saturday at 6:35 p.m.

Golden Bay N Continues To Deliver in $22,000 Open Pace at Hoosier

ANDERSON, Ind.—Picking up where he left off last week, Golden Bay N driven by Trace Tetrick for trainer Tyler George continued his strong form dominating in the $22,000 Open Pace at Hoosier on Friday (June 5).

Shooting out of the starting gate in post 5, Golden Bay N wasted little time finding the lead cruising to the rail beating out Rip Wheeler (Brandon Bates). Setting the tone, Golden Bay N led the way at the first quarter turn in :26.0 with Rip Wheeler and Shooting in Place (Jordan Ross) trying to keep up from second and third.

The seven-horse field remained unchanged in a single file line behind the leader Golden Bay N, who rode the wind to the halfway point in :53.1. Golden Bay N continued to build space from Rip Wheeler growing his lead to four lengths at three-quarters in 1:21.0. Meanwhile, M-M-S Bud began his charge from last along the outside with Coach Stefanos trailing closely behind.

Pacing to the stretch, M-M-S Bud continued to gain ground on the rest of the chaser; however, Golden Bay N’s lead maintained his advantage over the field.

Leaving little questions down the stretch, Golden Bay N took advantage of the open freeway. M-M-S Bud hoped to do the same from second, battling with Sanday A (Atlee Bender), Rip Wheeler, and a charging Coach Stefanos along the outside. Golden Bay N coasted to the wire in 1:49.2 by over 3-1/4 lengths. M-M-S Bud snagged second, while Coach Stefanos rallied for third.

The seven-year-old gelding is owned by Castaldo Racing Stable and T G Stable LLC. Golden Bay N increased his lifetime earnings to $255,203 and secured his third straight victory. Golden Bay N paid $3.80 to win. The Golden Bay N win was the first of four training wins for Tyler George on the 13-race card.

Live racing at Hoosier Park continues Saturday (May 6) showcasing a 14-race card with a $7,500 guaranteed Late Pick 4 and a $7,500 guaranteed Late Hoosier High 5 done in partnership with the USTA’s Strategic Wagering Program. First post is set for 5:30 pm.

HAMBURG, N.Y. --- Whats The Point ($20.14) made her point loud and clear to the gentlemen in Buffalo Raceway's $10,900 Trot as she wired the field and beat Biscoe by a length in 2:00.1 over the fast track. It was her second consecutive victory as she showed the jump in class wasn't going to phase her.

Starting from the inside post, Whats The Point David McNeight III) took immediate control of the race and notched fractions of :30.1, 1:00.3 and 1:30.3.

Turning for home, Whats The Point was still in command by a length as the pocket-sitting Biscoe (James McNeight Jr.) had every opportunity to go past but couldn't find an answer. Alonso (Ray Fisher Jr.) got up in time for third.

Plainville, MA — For the third consecutive week, Turn The Page put the swoop to the group in the $25,000 Open Handicap pace for fillies and mares at Plainridge Park on Friday (June 5) and remained undefeated in Massachusetts in 2026.

Ron Cushing took Turn The Page off the gate from post five and sat last as Intothemysticmoon Bruce Ranger) rambled on the point to the quarter in :26.3. But that lead was soon surrendered to Joan’srisingstar N (Kevin Switzer Jr.), who took control before the :54.1 half. At that same station, Cushing tipped Turn The Page and started advancing towards the leader as they rolled up the backside.

Joan’srisingstar N continued to lead by a length at three-quarters, but Turn The Page continued to advance and as they made their way through the turn, drew even with her. When the girls straightened for home, Turn The Page pushed ahead by a length and held that advantage over Joan’srisingstar N and a fast-closing Swedish Starlet N (Matty Athearn) to win in 1:50.1, tying her season’s best effort.

It was the sixth win in 13 starts this year for the heavily-backed Turn The Page ($3.80), who is owned by her driver, Ron Cushing, in partnership with Kevin Sywyk. Heidi Cushing trains the winner.

Kevin Switzer Jr. had a natural hat trick in races six, seven and eight to lead all reinsmen on Friday. Switzer won with Grafenberg (1:56.3, $5.60), Get Along (1:54, $3.40) and Waves (1:54.4, $23.40).

Racing resumes at Plainridge Park on Monday (June 8) at 4 p.m. and there will be a $39,168 carryover in the Wicked Hi-5 pentafecta wager in the sixth race.

Gingras Sweeps Goodtimes Eliminations with Magic Punk, Neighver Punt

by Ray Cotolo for Woodbine Communications
(New Image Media photo)

MILTON, Ont.— Yannick Gingras flew into Woodbine Mohawk Park for a pair of drives in the two $30,000 Goodtimes Eliminations – a Grade 2 event for trotting 3-year-olds – on Friday night (June 5) and found the winner’s circle with both, guiding 4-5 favorite Magic Punk and 4-1 third choice Neighver Punt to victories.

In the first elimination, Magic Punk floated off the wings from post 7 and gradually advanced to take the lead from Greenarrow Hanover past a :28 first quarter. As Magic Punk cleared, second-choice Strobe Lite tipped off the pylons from fourth and marched uncovered up the rim to reach for the lead into a :56 half. Gingras obliged to sit the pocket moving for the final turn and readied to pounce with his charge. Magic Punk spurted out of the pocket past three-quarters in 1:24.3 and slid away from Strobe Lite in the stretch to register an easy 2-3/4-length win. Wolfpack Crown grabbed third from Greenarrow Hanover while Land The Plane earned the last berth into the final.

“Ake [Svanstedt] said he’d be a little aggressive in the post parade and races two-fingered,” Gingras said after the race. “He had a lot of trot; push-button in the race. I used him a couple of times the way the race shook out, but he was well in hand. It was easy to let James [MacDonald] go – his horse was one of the horses to beat – and I figured I’d get him getting to the top of the stretch. It was no worries.”

Magic Punk, a c**t by Wishing Stone out of the Explosive Matter mare I D Entity NO, remained unbeaten from two starts this year with his other win coming in the Grade 3 Dexter Cup last month at The Meadowlands. Ake Svanstedt trains the six-time winner from 10 starts, with $427,879 earned, for owner Magic Punk Inc. He paid $3.50 to win.

Gingras fished cover for a second-over tow and successfully downed even-money favorite Touchedbyanangel in the final strides of a 1:51.4 mile in the second Goodtimes elimination.

After 8-5 second choice Exactly broke stride behind the gate, Royal Captain fired from post 6 to take the lead from pylon-starter Classified ripping into a :26.3 first quarter. Touchedbyanangel planted into fourth ahead of Neighver Punt and strode along up the backstretch until Gingras began creeping off the pylons approaching a :55.4 half, at which point driver Doug McNair pulled off the cones to push for the lead into the far turn. Royal Captain clung to a diminishing advantage with Touchedbyanangel looming to three-quarters in 1:24 and gave way in the stretch while McNair’s charge hustled for the finish. Neighver Punt had clear sailing in the final eighth and persisted to reel in the loose leader with every stride late for a NECK victory on the finish. Royal Captain held third with Classified finishing fourth and Dream For Peace closing for the last spot into the final.

“[I was told] he’s easy to drive, so I figured him out in the post parade,” Gingras said after the race. “I was confident in the middle of the last turn, but when we kicked for home Dougie [McNair] took off a little bit and I was like ‘alright, we’ll be second’ but he was still trotting. Down late he really dug in, so credit to the horse.”

Marcus Melander trains Neighver Punt, a c**t by Bar Hopping out of the Donato Hanover mare Twice Is Right, for owner Courant Inc. The c**t collected just the second win of his career from 12 starts, pushing his career earnings to $110,654, and paid $10.60 to win.

The post positions for the Goodtimes Final were drawn following the eliminations. The elimination winners earned the right to draw first for posts 2 through 6. Below is the field for the Goodtimes Final, which will take place on the undercard of the $1-million Pepsi North America Cup next Saturday (June 13):
