👕🔥 **September Fire Safety Reminder: Don't Forget About Your Dryer!** 🔥👕

Clothes dryers are a convenience we use all the time, but lint buildup and improper use can create a serious fire hazard.

The Eaton Township Fire Department would like to remind residents of a few simple ways to help prevent a dryer fire in your home:

🧺 **Clean the lint filter after every load** – A clogged lint screen reduces airflow and allows heat to build up.

🏠 **Check your dryer vent** – Make sure the vent pipe leading outside isn't crushed, kinked, or blocked, and periodically clean lint buildup from the vent and ductwork.

🌬️ **Check the outside vent** – While the dryer is running, make sure warm air is flowing freely from the exterior vent.

🚫 **Never dry items that have been exposed to gasoline, paint thinner, cooking oils, or other flammable substances.**

🔌 **Make sure your dryer is properly installed and plugged into the correct outlet.** Avoid using extension cords.

🌙 **Don't run the dryer when you're sleeping or away from home.** If something goes wrong, you want to be there to recognize it quickly.

A few minutes of routine maintenance can help prevent a fire and keep your home and family safe.

Tonight we got to spend a couple of hours with the staff, students, and their families at the Midview Local School District annual back to school event. We loved giving tours of the trucks, helping kids through the obstacle course, and seeing our friends at Metro Life Flight.

🚒 **Monthly Fire Safety Tip Series**

As part of our Monthly Fire Safety Tip series, the Eaton Township Fire Department continues to share practical reminders to help keep our residents safe throughout the year.

With summer coming to an end and a new school year beginning, August is a great time to reset your family's safety routines and make sure everyone knows what to do in an emergency.

🎒🔥 **August Fire Safety Tip: Back-to-School Fire Safety**

A new school year brings new schedules, activities, and routines. Take a few minutes to review these simple fire safety reminders with your family.

🏠 **Start the School Year with a Fire Safety Check**

* Test all smoke alarms in your home and make sure everyone can hear them from their sleeping areas.
* Make sure smoke alarms are installed on every level of your home, inside bedrooms, and outside sleeping areas.
* Review your family's fire escape plan and identify two ways out of each room, when possible.
* Choose an outdoor meeting place a safe distance from your home.
* Remind children that if a smoke alarm sounds, they should **get outside and stay outside**.

🍳 **After-School Cooking Safety**

* Children may be home preparing snacks or meals after school. Remind them to stay in the kitchen while cooking.
* Keep anything that can burn away from stovetops and other heat sources.
* Never leave cooking unattended.
* Make sure children know to **never use water on a grease fire**.
* Younger children should only use cooking appliances when supervised by an adult.

🎒 **Keep Exits Clear**

* Keep backpacks, shoes, sports equipment, and other belongings out of hallways and stairways.
* Make sure doors and windows that may be used for emergency escape can be opened easily.
* Avoid placing furniture or other items in front of exits.

📞 **Make Sure Your Children Know How to Call 9-1-1**

Knowing how to use a phone isn't always the same as knowing how to make a phone call. Children may be very comfortable navigating games and apps, but they may not know how to access the phone and place an emergency call.

Take a few minutes to practice with your child:

* Teach them how to unlock your phone and access the phone or emergency calling feature.
* Make sure they know to dial **9-1-1** when there is an emergency.
* Teach them to tell the dispatcher **what happened, where they are, and who needs help**.
* Practice speaking clearly and answering the dispatcher's questions.
* Remind them to **stay on the line until the dispatcher tells them to hang up**.

📞 **Practice Makes Perfect**

Have your child practice making a phone call to a trusted family member, such as Grandma or Grandpa. Let them practice finding the phone app, entering a number, pressing the call button, and speaking clearly.

Practicing these skills now can help your child feel more confident and prepared if they ever need to call for help.

A new school year is the perfect time to establish safe habits that can last a lifetime.

🌊☀️ July Water Safety Reminder ☀️🌊

Summer is the perfect time to enjoy pools, lakes, and other waterways, but it's important to make safety your top priority.

The Eaton Township Fire Department would like to share a few simple tips to help keep you and your family safe around the water:

🏊 Never swim alone. Always use the buddy system.

👀 Keep constant supervision of children. Drowning can happen quickly and often silently.

🦺 Wear a life jacket. Properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets save lives, especially for children and weaker swimmers.

🚫 Avoid alcohol while swimming or boating. Alcohol impairs judgment, balance, and reaction time.

🌩️ Get out of the water if you hear thunder. If you can hear thunder, you're close enough to be struck by lightning.

📱 Keep a phone nearby in case of an emergency.

🚨 Know the signs of drowning: A person in distress may not be able to call for help or wave their arms.

A fun day on the water starts with making safety your first priority. Have a safe and enjoyable summer!

Fireworks are a popular way to celebrate summer holidays, but they can also cause serious injuries, fires, and property damage when used improperly.

🎆 Fireworks Safety Tips
🔸 Always read and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
🔸 Keep a bucket of water, garden hose, or fire extinguisher nearby.
🔸 Never allow young children to handle or ignite fireworks.
🔸 Light only one firework at a time and move away quickly.
🔸 Never point fireworks at another person, animal, vehicle, or structure.
🔸 Never attempt to relight a firework that fails to ignite.

🔥 Protect Your Home & Property
🔸 Use fireworks in a clear, open area away from homes, vehicles, dry grass, and other combustible materials.
🔸 Be mindful of weather conditions, especially wind, which can carry sparks and embers.
🔸 Soak used fireworks in water before disposal.
