Priorities of a Library:
Awesome books and educational programs!
By Lisa Carroll

GRAHAMSVILLE—Undeniably, one of the top priorities of a library is to have a fresh, finely curated collection of materials for patrons to check out. Closely following that, is providing a wide variety of programs for patrons to attend.

Purposely, those programs are mostly educational in nature—it’s the business we’re in, after all, but that can come in a multitude of ways.

This past week, we held a LEGO program for second and third graders, a teen paint & sip (no alcohol—just fun), and an adult sip & paint. They were all well attended! The students (both the elementary and secondary) blew us away with their imagination and creativity. The younger children had the opportunity to build on their teamwork and social skills and the older kids enjoyed some screen-free time using their hands and minds to create beautiful glasses. And the adults…they just had fun, and maybe picked up some painting skills from resident author and Tri-Valley CSD teacher, Robin Raykoff, who hosted both the teen and adult paint & sip programs.

On Friday, May 29 from 9:00AM to 1:00PM, Red Cross will be here conducting a blood drive. It’s a chance to be a super hero and save a life with just a few minutes of your time (and some bravery if you’re a little scared of needles). Call 1-800-RED-CROSS or visit redcrossblood.org to schedule your appointment!

On Thursday, June 11 from 6:00-7:00PM, Kaylee Wagner, Grahamsville Branch Manager of Hudson Valley Credit Union will be here hosting “It’s Your Money.” This engaging and informative seminar will provide practical, beginner-friendly information on how to develop smart money habits. Some topics of discussion include: needs vs. wants and how to make smart spending choices, how to create and stick to a simple budget, the differences and options of savings, checking and loan accounts, understanding your credit score and tips to prevent identity theft and fraud. Please register through our website for this essential seminar. With the continued climb in prices, it’s so important to be armed with updated information, especially for teens and young adults who are just starting out.

Also for our June program lineup, we’re trying something new! On Tuesday, June 16, from 11:00AM to 5:00PM the Ellenville Regional Rural Health Network Mobile HEAL Unit will be here (in our parking lot) to offer health screens, education, access to resources and linkages to care (HEAL). No appointments or registration is needed, just show up! This is a great opportunity to learn about local resources and to stay on top of your health needs. The mobile unit will also be here on Friday, August 14 from 10:00 AM to 4:00PM.

Blood donors report feeling a sense of great satisfaction after making their blood donation. Why? Because helping others in need just feels good. Donate blood today to help those in need.
