On Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples Awareness Day, we recognize the ongoing crisis of violence affecting Indigenous communities. We stand with Native American and Alaska Native families seeking justice, safety and healing.

Through the BIA Office of Justice Services, we work with federal, tribal and local partners to help bring missing relatives home so families can find answers and begin healing.

On February 19th, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066. The order allowed military commanders to create military zones from which civilians could be excluded.

While the order did not specify any ethnic groups, the curfews and evacuation orders issued by the Western Defense Command only included Japanese Americans. This led to the forced removal, relocation, and loss of civil liberties of over 120,000 of Japanese descent. Over 2/3rds were American citizens.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the recission of EO 9066 by President Gerald Ford. After signing the proclamation, Ford remarked, "We know now what we should have known then--not only was that evacuation wrong, but Japanese Americans were and are loyal Americans."

On February 1st, 1943, President Roosevelt activated the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. The 442nd was a segregated united of the US Military for Japanese Americans. Alongside the 100th Infantry Battalion, another Japanese American unit, they fought in the European theater during WWII. The 442nd RCT is the most decorated unit of the military for it's size and length of service in US history.
