☀️ Safe Summer Starts With You! ☀️

Summer break is here, bringing opportunities for fun, adventure, and making memories with family and friends. It's also a great time to focus on the choices that help keep our youth and community safe, healthy, and thriving.

Positive connections, open conversations, and meaningful activities can make a big difference in helping young people navigate the summer months successfully.

This week, we challenge you to spend some quality time with the people who matter most.

💚 Tell us in the comments:
What is your family's favorite summer tradition in Hood County?

Whether it's fishing at the lake, backyard cookouts, family vacations, movie nights, or cheering at local events, we'd love to hear how your family spends time together!

Together, we can build a stronger, healthier community—one connection at a time.

Mental Health Awareness Month 💚

Feeling heard and respected can be deeply supportive.

Listening with compassion isn’t just kind—it can make a meaningful difference in someone’s mental health journey.

When someone you love is living with a serious mental illness, your steady presence and understanding matter more than having the “right” words.

Why feeling heard matters:
• Builds trust and emotional safety
• Reduces feelings of isolation and loneliness
• Encourages openness and honest communication
• Helps individuals feel valued and understood
• Supports connection to ongoing care and support

What compassionate listening looks like:
• Giving your full attention without distractions
• Listening without interrupting or trying to “fix” everything
• Validating feelings (e.g., “That sounds really hard”)
• Avoiding judgment or minimizing their experience
• Being patient and allowing space for silence

How to show steady support:
• Check in regularly and follow through
• Offer encouragement without pressure
• Respect their pace in seeking help or sharing
• Help connect them to resources if they’re open to it
• Simply be present—sometimes that’s what matters most

The impact of compassion and presence:
• Strengthens relationships and trust
• Increases willingness to seek and stay in care
• Promotes a sense of safety and stability
• Supports long-term healing and well-being

Let’s continue to:
• Listen with empathy and intention
• Show up with consistency and care
• Create safe spaces for honest conversations
• Support loved ones without judgment
• Remind others they are not alone 💚

Mental Health Awareness Month 💚

Understanding serious mental illness helps us respond with empathy and confidence.

When we take time to learn, we are better prepared to support others in a way that is compassionate, informed, and effective.

What is serious mental illness?
• Conditions that significantly impact a person’s thinking, emotions, or behavior
• Can interfere with daily functioning, relationships, work, or self-care
• May include disorders such as major depression, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia
• Often requires ongoing support, treatment, and understanding

Why understanding matters:
• Reduces stigma and misconceptions
• Helps us respond with empathy instead of judgment
• Builds confidence in how to support someone in need
• Encourages earlier recognition of warning signs
• Promotes connection to appropriate care and resources

How you can respond with empathy and confidence:
• Listen without judgment and validate their experience
• Use respectful, person-centered language
• Avoid making assumptions or minimizing their feelings
• Encourage professional support when needed
• Stay patient, supportive, and consistent

The impact of informed support:
• Strengthens trust and relationships
• Helps individuals feel seen, heard, and valued
• Increases the likelihood of seeking and staying in care
• Supports recovery, stability, and overall well-being

Let’s continue to:
• Learn and raise awareness about mental health
• Lead with compassion and understanding
• Support individuals and families navigating challenges
• Break the stigma surrounding serious mental illness
• Remind others they are not alone 💚

Mental Health Awareness Month 💚

Respectful communication is especially important during times of transition.

Life changes such as housing instability or reentry into the community can be stressful and overwhelming. During these moments, the way we communicate can either build trust—or create barriers to care.

Compassionate, coordinated support helps reduce disruptions and keeps people connected to the services they need.

Why respectful communication matters:
• Builds trust and a sense of safety
• Reduces feelings of shame or stigma
• Encourages continued engagement in care
• Supports smoother transitions between services
• Strengthens relationships between individuals and providers

What supportive communication looks like:
• Speaking with empathy and without judgment
• Listening actively and validating experiences
• Using clear, respectful, and person-centered language
• Being patient and allowing time for adjustment
• Offering consistent encouragement and support

The impact of coordinated care:
• Helps prevent gaps in services during transitions
• Promotes stability and continuity of care
• Improves overall mental health outcomes
• Supports long-term recovery and well-being

Let’s continue to:
• Lead with compassion and respect
• Support individuals during times of change
• Work together across systems to provide consistent care
• Break down barriers to access and support
• Remind people they are not alone 💚

Mental Health Awareness Month 💚

The words we choose matter more than we think.

When we speak with care, respect, and intention, we create space for connection—and connection opens the door to support and healing.

Thoughtful language can:
• Reduce stigma around mental health
• Help people feel safe sharing their experiences
• Build trust and strengthen relationships
• Encourage individuals to seek help sooner
• Promote understanding instead of judgment

What this can look like:
• Using person-first language (e.g., “a person experiencing depression” vs. labels)
• Listening without interrupting or dismissing feelings
• Avoiding harmful or minimizing phrases like “just get over it”
• Validating emotions with empathy and compassion
• Asking open-ended, supportive questions

Small shifts in how we communicate can make a big difference.

Let’s continue to:
• Speak with kindness and intention
• Create safe spaces for honest conversations
• Lead with empathy, not judgment
• Encourage connection to care and support
• Remind others they are not alone 💚

When communities are informed and engaged, we are better able to recognize when someone—especially a young person—may be struggling. Open conversations about mental health help reduce stigma, build trust, and create pathways to support.

Young people thrive when support comes early.

Early support can:
• Improve emotional well-being and daily functioning
• Strengthen coping skills and resilience
• Prevent challenges from becoming more severe
• Increase connection to positive supports and resources
• Build confidence in asking for help

What to watch for:
• Changes in mood (sadness, irritability, anxiety)
• Changes in sleep or appetite
• Withdrawal from friends, family, or activities
• Difficulty concentrating or changes in school performance
• Increased risk-taking or concerning behaviors

Asking for help on behalf of a child, teen, or young adult is an act of protection and advocacy—not weakness. It shows care, awareness, and a commitment to their future.

Let’s continue to:
• Build community awareness through education and conversation
• Encourage early help-seeking behaviors
• Create safe, supportive, and judgment-free environments
• Partner with schools, families, and community programs
• Trust our instincts when something doesn’t feel right
• Support families in accessing care and resources
• Remind young people they are not alone and help is available 💚
