We remember all those who ran towards the danger and made the ultimate sacrifice. We honor the responders who worked to recover victims and have paid a physical, mental, and emotional debt, many succumbing to illness and injury decades later. We salute a generation who answered the innate call to serve their country and community in the days, weeks, and years after 9/11.

Honor those we lost on 9/11 and those we continue to lose from 9/11 related illnesses.

Live well, be kind, and do good in their memory.
Never forget.

Part 2 of 2, On EMS Day, Granby First Responder campers learned the principles of “Until Help Arrives,” a program focused on bystander safety, calling 911, providing immediate lifesaving medical care, and safely moving a victim when necessary.

The campers then gained hands-on experience with EMS assessment skills and equipment. They practiced using our EKG equipment, performing the BEFAST stroke assessment, CPR and AED skills, and Stop the Bleed techniques. They were also introduced to advanced life-support interventions, including intubation, i-gel airway placement, surgical cricothyrotomy and intraosseous needle placement.

To finish the day, the campers put their skills and teamwork to the test during a multi-casualty motor vehicle crash simulation. They divided into bystanders, victims, and first responders and worked together to assess the scene, provide care, and manage the incident.

It was a busy, hands-on day that gave our campers a firsthand look at the skills, teamwork, and decision-making involved in emergency medical services.

Special thanks to our EMS camp counselors: Paramedics Josh R., Dave R., Steve Y., Derrick C. and EMTs Nick L., Alyssa L., Tashdid S., Ryan L., Pedro M., Matt H. and Chief Coupe.

Our friends at First Approach EMS Education & Staffing will be offering 3 different EMS certification courses this fall! If you're looking to become an emergency medical responder (EMR), an emergency medical technician (EMT), or you are an EMR looking to step up to the EMT level, here's your chance!

An EMR is the base level of pre-hospital certification recognized in CT, where students learn CPR, AED use, assessment for medical and trauma patients, how to take vital signs, stop lofe threatening bleeding, provide oxygen, provide naloxone for opioid overdoses, and assist in childbirth. EMRs do not provide solo care in the back of thrle ambulance, but may be an emergency vehicle operator depending on the agency. Many CT law enforcement officers and firefighters are EMRs!

An EMT is the next level up from an EMR. EMTs have additional training in patient assessment, management, treatment options, and ongoing care during transport to a hospital. They can provide more medications through different methods, may use an specific breathing tube if allowed at thejr agency along with other breathing assistance, and much more! Ambulances generally have at least 1 EMT as a crew member, and many career fire department require at least an EMT certification if not a higher education. Anyone wishing to become a paramedic or advanced EMT (AEMT), must start as an EMT.

EMRs that want to jump to the EMT don't have to start all over from scratch if they take a "bridge" course. These courses fill in the necessary gaps in knowledge, skills, and abilities so the student can test for their National and State certifications.
