On Monday, January 19th, the LAFD was toned out just after 7:30 AM for a report of a room on fire at a residence on Lost Acres Road. While enroute, Granby Police dispatchers were receiving numerous 911 calls reporting an active fire. Based on these reports and the heavy column of smoke that was visible, mutual aid was requested from several towns before LAFD units were even on scene.

Granby Police officers arrived on scene first and reported heavy fire as well as the fact that the occupant of the residence was trapped on a 2nd floor porch with his two dogs.

The first arriving LAFD engine (LA4) immediately went into rescue mode once on scene and deployed a ladder to the porch to rescue the occupant and dogs. Crews then moved from rescue into fire suppression mode. The snow and the cold along with heavy contents within the structure created different challenges for the LAFD and mutual aid departments as they worked to extinguish the fire.

As with most parts of Granby, there are no hydrants in this section of town, so a water shuttle operation was setup using tankers. Tankers dropped their water to the working engines and then were filled at the dry hydrant on Northwoods Road.

There were no injuries reported and all fire units were clear of the scene around 11 AM. The Granby Fire Marshal office is investigating the blaze.

The LAFD would like to thank all the agencies listed below that assisted us with this fire.
The East Hartland Volunteer Fire Department
Southwick Fire Department
East Granby Vol. Fire Department
Simsbury Volunteer Fire Company
Pleasant Valley Vol. Fire Department
Suffield Fire Department
Hartford County Fire Coordinators
Granby CT Police Department
Granby Ambulance Association
Granby CT Department of Public Works
Lost Acres Fire Department Auxiliary
Granby Fire Marshal’s Office

(Thanks also to the residents on Apple Tree Lane for assisting the LAFD Auxiliary)

Firefighters were able to rescue the man and his two dogs safely.

The LAFD sends their condolences to the Avon Volunteer Fire Department and to the family of Deputy Chief Theriault. DC Theriault was someone that we worked and trained with on a regular basis. Rest easy Chief.

Today, the Avon Volunteer Fire Department mourns the passing of Deputy Chief David Theriault.

Deputy Chief Theriault dedicated nearly 35 years of his life to serving the Town of Avon, beginning as an Explorer at age 14 and rising through the ranks to Deputy Chief. He passed away following a courageous battle with occupational cancer.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who had the honor of serving alongside him. đź–¤

At the LAFD Christmas party in December, the LAFD took some time to formally recognize and thank John Horr, Jr, for his 17 years of service as Chief of the LAFD.

Chief Horr was presented a ceremonial speaking trumpet by Chief Tim Weber. The speaking trumpet holds a revered place in fire service history as an early tool of command and communication on the fireground. Before radios, officers used it to project clear, authoritative orders through smoke and chaos, helping keep crews coordinated and safe. More than a tool, it became a symbol of leadership, responsibility, and tradition—representing the trusted voice of command when it mattered most.

In addition to recognizing his 17 years of service, the LAFD also recognized Chief Horr for his 45 years of service to the LAFD with a ceremonial challenge coin.

Please join us in thanking Chief Horr for his tireless service to the Town of Granby.

On Tuesday, July 8th, the Lost Acres Fire Department held their annual meeting. Prior to this meeting, Chief John Horr, Jr. indicated that he did not intend to run for reelection.

Tim Weber has been voted by the membership of the LAFD as the new Chief of the Lost Acres Fire Department. Tim joined the LAFD in 1998, becoming an officer in 2007. Tim has served as Chief level officer since 2013 – first as a Deputy Chief and most recently as Assistant Chief. In his years with the LAFD, Tim has spearheaded several initiatives including updating the LAFD’s website and page, and most recently securing an AFG grant for the LAFD’s new air packs. In addition to his work in the LAFD, Tim serves as an instructor at the Hartford County Regional Fire Academy.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank John for his 17 years of service as Chief of the LAFD. During his tenure as Chief, John completely transformed the LAFD into the excellent, modern department that we are now. John led the department through changes in equipment – with the LAFD replacing several pieces of apparatus, replacement of the air packs (two replacement cycles) and the most significant project, the town-wide radio system replacement that is currently underway. John’s steadfast leadership has helped the LAFD navigate these changes with ease and continue serving the local community without interruption.

John also worked tirelessly to help increase the presence of the LAFD within Granby and surrounding areas. Through John’s efforts and work with Granby elected officials, he was able to bring the Tax Abatement incentive to the LAFD members, securing increased funding for the LAFD. John increased our role in the regional fire task forces, with LAFD being an active member in both Task Force 52 and Task Force 54, which John has been the leader of for several years.

To John – on behalf of the members of the LAFD and residents of Granby, we extend our deepest appreciation. Thank you. Your service and your efforts have made a lasting impact and paved the way for the future of the LAFD.
