Calling all College Students!
As many of you are aware, the North Dakota Primary Election is on June 9th. While we might be away from campus, we'd still like to introduce you to the District 42 DEM-NPL candidates! Below are bios and links to each of the candidates and their pages:
Senate Candidate - Melissa Gjellstad, a native North Dakotan and UND Norwegian professor:
“I returned to ND in 2008 to teach at UND because I believe public education provides opportunity. Young people from rural America deserve a quality education, from pre-K to university and beyond. Working with college students of all ages as an educator, I’ve seen firsthand how disparities and legislative decisions in the state impact my students, colleagues, neighbors, and all our families. At UND, I served as Chair of the University Senate and champion collaborative governance. Within the state, I served on and chaired the Humanities North Dakota Board, and am a member of the Grand Forks Downtown Rotary and the Grand Forks Curling Club.”

House Candidate - Adam Fortwengler, a Grand Forks Central and UND alumnus and Program Coordinator at Global Friends Coalition:
“I’m running because I cannot sit by and watch working families struggle like they do without doing something to fix it. Wages are too low for many workers, healthcare is far too expensive for most, and workplace and employment protections are functionally nonexistent. For far too long, the lives of working families have been placed in a constant state of fear and anxiety for no other reason than to increase others’ profits. I’m in this fight to take on the corporate and special interests holding hard-working North Dakotans down and to ensure a decent life for all.”

House Candidate - Zachary Stephen Tomczik, a second-year law student at the UND School of Law and a UND alumnus:
“I currently work for the Grand Forks Parks District, the Grand Forks Withdrawal Management Center as a Detox Advocate, and at the Grand Forks County Courthouse. These experiences have provided me with firsthand knowledge of issues Grand Forks community members face and the need for resources to address these challenges. My vision is to help North Dakota be a pioneer in education, infrastructure, and healthcare.”
