💡Ferrysburg Homes Get Power for the First Time

As we look back on the BLP’s 130 years of service, it’s inspiring to remember the many decisions that helped bring reliable, affordable electricity not only to Grand Haven, but to the surrounding communities as well.

Did you know?

On January 29, 1926, homes in Ferrysburg began receiving service from the Grand Haven electric power plant. ⚡️

Making that possible required a special vote by Spring Lake Township, allowing the City of Grand Haven to install electric light and power lines in Ferrysburg. As reported in the Grand Haven Daily Tribune on January 30, 1926, the vote was almost unanimous in favor of ratifying the electric light franchise.

A century later, this moment is a powerful reminder of what can happen when communities come together to invest in a brighter future. 💙

💡Imagine having your morning routine dictated by a town-wide power shutdown!

It’s easy to take reliable electricity for granted today—but a century ago, power wasn’t something you could count on 24/7.
We recently came across a fascinating notice from the February 3, 1923 edition of the Grand Haven Tribune. It informed residents that electricity for the entire community would be temporarily shut off while maintenance was performed on the local power plant. No partial outages. No backup systems. Just… darkness.

One of our favorite lines gently warned that anyone planning to make toast or prepare breakfast with electric appliances would need to go without—or switch to gas instead.
It’s a small but powerful reminder of how far we’ve come—and how much daily life has changed thanks to reliable energy. ⚡

💡Check out this history!
In 1940, BLP linemen relied on basic tools with minimal protection.

Fast forward to today, and they are equipped with insulated gloves, advanced climbing gear, and adhere to strict safety protocols. The trucks have transformed from simple utility vehicles into mobile command centers, now featuring GPS, hydraulic lifts, and communication devices. These advancements have significantly enhanced both efficiency and safety for linemen, demonstrating the industry's adaptability and growth over the years.

⚡ Big improvements are happening in downtown Grand Haven!

The Grand Haven Board of Light & Power has officially completed the undergrounding of electrical lines along Harbor Drive, replacing overhead 13.2 kV distribution lines from Columbus Avenue to Howard Avenue with a modern underground electrical system.

This investment includes:
✅ Two new underground three-phase circuits
✅ New padmount switchgear and sectionalizing cabinets
✅ Underground secondary conductors
✅ Removal of utility poles and overhead wires

THANK YOU to Grand Haven Tribune for covering the story from the very beginning. Check out the article from July 24, 2026 for more information.

A cleaner downtown skyline. A stronger electric system. A more resilient future.
