Happy Labor Day from Grand Haven Public Safety!

Labor Day is more than just the unofficial end of summer. It is a day to recognize and celebrate the hard work, dedication, and contributions of workers who help keep our communities, businesses, families, and country moving forward.

We hope everyone has an opportunity this Labor Day to slow down, spend time with family and friends, relax, and enjoy the holiday.

To all of you who work behind the scenes, serve our community, build, teach, care for others, protect, respond, and keep things running, thank you for everything you do.

In observance of Labor Day, our administrative office will be closed Monday, September 7.

We will resume normal business hours on Tuesday, September 8.

This week has been a busy and exciting one as we kicked off three weeks of in-house training for our five newest officers!

Last week, four of our new officers graduated from the Grand Valley State University Police Academy and joined our team.

They are joined by lateral Public Safety Officer Alexis Steele, who comes to us from Petoskey Public Safety with nearly four years of fully cross-trained public safety experience.

We’re excited to welcome all five of them to the Grand Haven Public Safety family and look forward to showcasing each of our new officers throughout the upcoming weeks. These officers were hired to fill vacant positions and prepare for a future retirement.

Our goal is that by the time they hit the road, they won’t just be new officers—you’ll recognize them as familiar, friendly faces in our community.

Stand Up for Others

Sometimes, standing up for someone doesn’t mean confronting a bully or having all the answers. Sometimes, it means speaking up and making sure someone knows they aren’t alone.

Our kids are growing up in a world where social media can become a 24/7 negative sounding board, and unfortunately, society can sometimes be a pretty mean place.

Students need a safe space to speak up, ask for help, and report concerns without feeling like they have to handle everything on their own.

That’s where OK2SAY Michigan comes in. OK2SAY provides students with a safe and confidential way to report threats, bullying, harassment, violence, mental health concerns, and other issues that may affect themselves, someone else or a school.

Parents, take a few minutes to talk with your kids about OK2SAY and make sure they know it’s an option. Sometimes the hardest part is simply knowing where to turn.

See something? Say something.

Worried about a friend? Speak up.

Threats on a school? Report it.

Need help? You don’t have to face it alone.

Let’s remind our kids that being kind is cool, standing up for others matters, and asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Proud Moment for Grand Haven Public Safety

Today, we had the opportunity to celebrate an incredible accomplishment as four of our newest officers graduated from Grand Valley State University’s Police Academy!

And these recruits didn’t just graduate, they cleaned up! Two were selected as Squad Leaders, one earned the Michigan Commission of Law Enforcement Outstanding Recruit Award distinction, and Military Honors.

We couldn’t be more proud of these four and all the hard work, dedication and commitment they have shown throughout their 17 week academy journey. You can tell the support by our department turn out.

On Monday, the next chapter begins as they officially start their in-house training with Grand Haven Public Safety. We are excited to welcome them into our department family and watch them continue to grow into the officers they are destined to become, for a community that deserves great officers.

Congratulations to Officer Fless, Officer Hemstreet, Officer Lafleur, and Officer Pierce! Welcome, you’ve already made us proud!

As we head back to school, please remember:

STOP when a school bus has its red lights flashing.

Watch carefully for children getting on and off the bus.

Watch for kids who are walking or riding bikes.

Slow down in school zones and around bus stops.

Put the phone down (should be a given as it's against the law) and keep your eyes on the road.

Give yourself a little extra time, because school drop-off traffic is going to test everyone’s patience!

And to our school bus drivers: we see you! Thank you for safely transporting our kids each day.

We’ll be out there keeping an extra eye on traffic and helping everyone get where they need to go safely.

Slow down. Pay attention. Stop for the bus. Protect our kids.

Back to School = Back to Busy!

School is back in session on Wednesday for Grand Haven Area Public Schools, and that means the morning commute is about to get a little more interesting. This is why we are starting our messaging early.

With so many schools throughout our city, we encourage everyone to start your day a little earlier, pack your patience, and give yourself some extra time. Parents are navigating drop-offs, students are finding their routines, and our bus drivers are doing their best to safely navigate an increase in traffic.

You’ll see Grand Haven Public Safety out and about, as we welcome our students back to school. We are excited to have them back in our community!

And a VERY important reminder:

STOP FOR SCHOOL BUSES!

Those flashing red lights aren't a suggestion. They mean STOP. Give our kids the time and space they need to get on and off the bus safely.

So, Grand Haven, deep breath, coffee up, leave a little earlier, and let's start this school year off safely!

WAIT, WHERE DID SUMMER GO?!

It feels like we just turned on the water yesterday, and somehow we’re already wrapping up our Pop-Up Spray Parties!

A HUGE thank you to all of our amazing Pop-Up Party locations for welcoming us this summer and helping us bring the fun to the community. And another big shoutout to Sweet Temptations for helping make the days even sweeter by providing ice cream!

We had a blast bringing the water, the smiles, the chaos and a whole lot of fun to Grand Haven. We’re already looking forward to next summer and bringing the spray party back!

But for now, that’s a wrap on summer!

Seriously, where did the time go?! We’re pretty sure someone hit the fast-forward button.

Now we turn our attention to October, when we’ll be hosting our Fire Prevention Open House! Stay tuned for all the details!

Enjoy these last few days of summer, Grand Haven! Soak up the sunshine, make some memories, and maybe eat one more ice cream or five.

Guess what, Grand Haven City?!
