Grand Haven Department of Public Safety

Grand Haven Department of Public Safety The Grand Haven Department of Public Safety provides Law Enforcement, Fire and Emergency Medical Services.

The Grand Haven Department of Public Safety (GHDPS) provides comprehensive police and fire services to the community 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The agency responds to approximately 10,000 police-related calls for service annually and supports numerous community events through traffic safety, crowd management, and security operations. In addition to traditional law enforcement duties, all o

fficers are cross-trained as firefighters, enabling them to respond to medical emergencies and fire incidents, accounting for an additional 1,900 + calls for service each year. GHDPS officers work twelve-hour shifts, with each officer scheduled for seven shifts during a two-week pay period. One officer is assigned to staff the fire apparatus while the remaining officers operate from patrol vehicles, performing both police and fire duties within one of four designated districts. The department operates on a four-team structure, consisting of two day shifts and two night shifts, each under the direct supervision of a sergeant.

Training Tuesday: Water Rescue

Today, our crews took advantage of the beautiful weather to get out on the water and sharpen their water rescue skills. Training like this is critical to ensuring our officers remain prepared to respond quickly and safely when emergencies occur on our waterways.

We'll be back out next Tuesday conducting additional water rescue training. While we hope these skills are never needed, maintaining proficiency through regular training helps ensure we're ready when our community needs us most.

A big thank you to our officers for their continued commitment to training and professional development. Stay safe and enjoy the water responsibly this summer!

Tuesday Tourist Tip
When you're on vacation, it's easy to get caught up in relaxation mode, but don't forget about safety.

At home, you know the importance of having working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, and a family escape plan. But what about when you're staying in a rental home, Airbnb, condo, or hotel?

Before you settle in, take a few minutes to:

Learn the address of where you're staying and make sure everyone in your group knows it. Could you tell a 911 dispatcher where you are if an emergency happened?

Check for working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.

Identify all exits and create a simple fire escape plan.

Establish a family meeting location outside in case you need to evacuate.

A change of scenery shouldn't mean a change in your safety priorities. A little preparation can make a big difference when seconds count.

Listen to Fire Marshal Turkelson as he shares a few simple ways to put safety first while enjoying your vacation.

Today is National Positive Media Day.

Yes, that's apparently a real thing.

For the next 24 hours, we're asking everyone to do something truly courageous: say something nice online.

We know. It's a bold request.

We're not sure who came up with that, or if they've been on social media lately, but we'll celebrate it anyway.

So today, before hitting "post," "comment," or "reply," let's try something different:
Compliment someone.
Thank someone
Encourage a local business.

In all seriousness, we appreciate the community members who take the time to share kindness, encouragement, and constructive feedback. It doesn't go unnoticed, and it helps keep us motivated to serve this amazing community every day.

Make it a great day, Grand Haven.

Week two of in-house firefighter training is in the books!

Our new firefighters continued building their skills through driving course operations, size-up training, extrication tool relay challenges, and stairway standpipe operations. These hands-on exercises provide the foundation of knowledge and experience needed to succeed as Public Safety Officers.

We are excited to send these officers to shift, where their training, knowledge, and experience will continue to grow and flourish.

Great job by all involved!

A special thank you to the staff who held down the road and answered calls for service while this training was taking place. Your dedication and teamwork make opportunities like this possible.

We know another Public Safety post reminding everyone to lock their vehicles and homes.

While it may sound repetitive, there's a reason we keep bringing it up. The reality is that many of these type of incidents can be prevented with a few simple steps.

Grand Haven is a wonderful community, but we are not immune to crime or individuals looking for an easy opportunity.

A friendly reminder to:

Lock your vehicles.
Lock your homes.
Remove valuables from plain sight.
Bring keys and key fobs inside.

We'll continue sharing this message because prevention is always better than becoming a victim.

If you see suspicious activity in your neighborhood, please report it. Together, we can help keep Grand Haven a safe place to live, work, and visit.

We figured we'd take advantage of this not-so-summery Michigan weather to talk about pet safety for when summer finally decides to show up on a consistent basis.

While we're all still wondering if it's June or April, now is a great time to remember a few warm-weather pet safety tips

For now, enjoy the extra layers and unpredictable forecasts. After all, this is Michigan, summer could arrive tomorrow or sometime in August.
