Helen Hargis Hill was born in Grand Island, Nebraska, where she lived with her parents, Andrew and Mabel Hargis, in the Queen Anne Victorian home at 1109 W. Second Street. At age 13, her family moved to Los Angeles. She attended the Westlake Academy for Girls (now Harvard Military-Westlake) and graduated from the University of Southern California.

On August 30, 1920, she married Cornelius Hill, a Stanford University graduate.

Helen's wedding picture is shown below. It is one of the Hargis House Woman's Club's favorite pictures of Hargis family members. It is displayed in the room that was Helen's bedroom. Helen returned to Grand Island when she was 17 for a visit with friends but did not return again until 1980 when she came to see her girlhood home following the 1980 tornadoes. She shared with the Grand Island Independent then that her mother used to graze a cow in the front yard on 2nd Street, and that the family had the first car in Grand Island. It was a 1903 Oldsmobile and her parents did not use it often as it frightened the horses.

You may tour the house and see other Hargis photos on October 10 from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. (donations accepted) during our annual bake, craft, and plant sale.

Since replacing the porch flooring on the Hargis House, we have had inquiries concerning what may have been found beneath the porch. Aside from dirt and nails, we thought there was little to be found. However, a few bricks were discovered and only one was engraved so that we could research where and when it was made. Shown below is a brick made by the W.S. Dickey company and this particular one was made in Versailles, Missouri. Walter S. DIckey opened his clay manufacturing plants in 1885. He later sold the plants in the early 1930s. Mr. Dickey is also pictured below.
