We are conducting firefighter recruit testing today and tomorrow, with candidates completing both written and physical assessments as part of the hiring process.

This year's 71 applicants mark the department's largest recruit pool in more than a decade.

We now offering qualifying residents a free residential Knox Box to help first responders access homes more quickly during emergencies while reducing the need for forced entry. Priority is given to seniors, individuals with mobility limitations or chronic medical conditions, and residents who live alone or are frequently alone.

With fireworks now on sale, it's important to keep children 👧 and pets 🐶 a safe distance away, always supervise their use and never allow young children to handle sparklers. 🎆 As you celebrate the 4th of July, we'd like to remind everyone to make safety a priority when using fireworks.

Whenever possible, attend a professional display, such as the July 4 fireworks show at Stuhr Museum. If you choose to use fireworks at home, supervise children closely, keep water nearby and only use legal fireworks purchased from licensed Nebraska retailers.

⏰ Fireworks discharge hours within Grand Island city limits:

• June 28–July 2: 8 a.m.–10 p.m.
• July 3: 8 a.m.–11 p.m.
• July 4: 8 a.m.–midnight
