She's just the kind of person every county in the United States should have for its Election Commissioner. Tracy Overstreet talked to our club this week about things we should know going into an election.
EVERY vote counts, EVERY eligible voter should be registered, and EVERY REGISTERED VOTER SHOULD VOTE. In a year she thought would be busy, only 7% of registered voters have participated in the process thus far. Voter apathy is at a critical stage. Efforts are being made to register students, a voting group that has dwindled since COVID. But what about the rest of the potential voting pool?
Frustrating news is that about 7500 voters make all the decisions, because so many others don't cast ballots.
When talking about conspiracy theories regarding voter fraud, Overstreet spelled out the multi-step safeguards put in place that make fraud nearly impossible. The verification process is very effective.

At each meeting, members are asked to share Good News.
At the recent meeting, members shared about Hot Meals USA's efforts during the Nebraska wildfires. Our club financially supported this effort, and some members personally assisted.
We were also given initial totals from our annual Taste of Grand Island fundraiser. We partnered with Project Hunger this year, and what a great group of servant spirits they are.

The wonderful Deb McCaslan, spoke to us about a Rotary program close to her heart. It seeks to help communities (specifically girls) in Zimbabwe with education and health, plus menstrual hygiene and management.
Financial obstacles and health-related issues are part of the reason the country has a median age of 18.3. Deb said that while she was taking health information at a clinic, ALL young women reported the number of living children, but also the number that had died.
Deb, her club (Broken Bow Area Rotary), Victory Falls Rotary (Victoria Falls Town, Zimbabwe), and others are banding together to dig wells (locally sourced water), create community gardens (local food), provide workforce education (sewing clubs), build safe and private bathroom space for girls (currently no doors on restrooms) and make menstruation kits (dung is often used since pads are unattainable). This collaboration is supported through Rotary International grants. my.rotary.org/en/donate

Ever heard of the IFRSD? It's the International Fellowship of Rotarian Scuba Divers. Our member, Tom Pirnie, has been on many dives as part of this group and spoke to us about a dive in Palau. On dives such as these, Rotarians give money for local projects. In this case, over $4000 was given to the local Rotary Club to build playgrounds.

The divers also take land tours. Palau was heavily impacted by WWII and was the site of a deadly battle resulting in tens of thousands of deaths (from KIAs to lack of clean water).
See more information about the dive in the photos and video at the end.

Recently, Chris Helzer, with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) spoke to our club, about Nebraska's prairies and the inhabitants we don't neccessarily see.
Did you know that Nebraska is half prairie and its grassland dates back thousands of years? Diverse types of vegetation, birds, insects, and topography are part of this ecosystem. Surprisingly, 110 types of grasshoppers, 27 types of prairies bees and 10 times more moth species than butterflies are among the residents.
The work of conservation entities like TNC are hard at work to restore and maintain the prairie, which includes indentifying these species.
Visit TNC's local field office at 13650 S Platte River Dr., south of I-80, and off of Wood River Road, and check out their trails.
