At last night's training we focused on airway management, and EKG 12 lead placement. This was also a great refresher on all the features our zoll monitor offers.

Earlier this month we had a critical call that left our ambulance quite a mess, compared to the majority of our calls.
We ended up using a CPAP machine, medications, EKG, oxygen, and called for a paramedic intercept.
We had two advanced EMT's and one VERF respond to this call for help.

Last night was our maintenance night.
And on those nights we check both our ambulances:
* For medications and medical devices that will soon expire.
* Restock anything that might be lacking or missing.
* Test all of the equipment like our zoll, gurney, suction, AED, and any other equipment that requires power.
* We check our Emergency system, - radio, lights and sirens.
* We also check the fluids and mechanics of each ambulance.
On maintenance nights, the saying "many hands make light work" couldn't be more accurate. It took 8 people almost two hours to go through both ambulances.

Grand Isle / North Hero Rescue is proud to recognize Camp Abnaki as the recipient of the 2026 Community Emergency Preparedness Award in honor of the camp staff’s outstanding actions during an emergency on July 12, 2026.

The award recognizes organizations and individuals who demonstrate exceptional preparedness, professionalism, and commitment to protecting the health and safety of those in their care. Camp Abnaki’s response on July 12 exemplified these values.

It was immediately clear from the actions of the Camp Abnaki staff that they had prepared for the unexpected. Their well-trained, professional team responded quickly, remained calm under pressure, and worked seamlessly to manage a critical situation until emergency responders arrived. Their preparedness and dedication made a meaningful difference.

Emergency preparedness is built long before an incident occurs through planning, training, communication, and regular practice. Camp Abnaki’s staff demonstrated that this investment in preparedness pays dividends when every second counts. Their coordinated response reflected a culture of safety and a commitment to the well-being of every camper, staff member, and visitor.

Last night... Minutes before our evening training started we were dispatched to a community member who was having a medical emergency. Our crew arrived on scene within minutes and transported the patient to the hospital.

Last summer we placed an order for a new ambulance, and we just received an update. It will be delivered later this year!
This new ambulance will replace our aging A-1.

The typical lifespan of a front-line ambulance is 5 to 7 years in a high call volume agency. While an ambulance in rural or low call volume agencie tends to have a life span of 7-10 years.

Grand Isle A-1 is a 2014 ram with about 100k miles. This is our primary 1st out ambulance.

Grand isle A-2 is a 2016 ram with about 50k miles. This ambulance is used when we have multiple patients, more than one call, or if A-1 is out of service.
Sometimes A-2 will be assigned the primary ambulance if it has sat for too long.

We would like to recognize and thank our island Fire departments for all that they do for us.

Our local firefighters help rescue in more ways than just putting out fires. They assist with CPR, lifting and moving patients, driving the ambulance, scene safety and so much more.

A Narcan distribution box has been placed at our town office.
Narcan is a temporary receptor blocker, and once used will only work for minutes. After that the effects might come back.
Since Narcan is temporary, 911 should be called anytime it is used.

The box is part of a larger project at the town library next door, where it will eventually be moved alongside a 911 emergency phone and an AED machine.
