Weeks 3, 4, and 5 of our Prospective Member course is where our PMs really started getting hands on with the team’s technical rescue systems.

Training started with an introduction to technical systems before moving into live demos & practical work. PMs worked through anchor building, system setup & personal rope skills including ascending and descending. There was even a race to see who could ascend a rope the fastest, with a few prizes on the line.

All of that training led into their first low angle rescue scenario. PMs navigated to the location, completed patient assessments, packaged the patient & built a full system capable of both a lower and a raise.

Each week the PMs continue building skills, gaining confidence with the gear & getting one step closer to becoming full members of Mesa County Search & Rescue.

We’ve been busy the last few weeks with the Prospective Members (PMs) class that we’ve fallen behind on sharing their progress! Our 18 PMs have been doing a phenomenal job and we want to make sure to highlight all their progress.

Here’s a look into Week 2. It focused on hands on rescue skills. PMs practiced patient assessments through a variety of scenarios designed to build confidence & strengthen primary assessment skills.

They also learned how to properly package a patient in a litter for transport, including litter assembly and selection, patient packaging techniques, and safe litter movement in the field.

Our 2026 Prospective Members (PM) class is officially underway.

Before reaching this stage, applicants must apply, interview, and be selected to participate. The PM course is an intensive 8-week training designed to prepare future members of Mesa County Search & Rescue (MCSAR) for the demands of the field. Attendance is mandatory, with training held every Thursday and Saturday.

These photos highlight the first week of the course.

Week one introduced PMs to team expectations, our rescue vehicle fleet, and COTAK, the situational awareness tool used during missions. The week finished with a fitness hike where members carried a 35 pound pack for about five miles.

We had a little fun with the pack weight requirement & awarded prizes for the most creative items used to reach 35 pounds. Some of the fun faves included a large bag of rice, concrete garden gnomes & cans of beans.

This course builds the knowledge, physical readiness & teamwork required to respond safely & effectively to all missions.

On Sunday, March 8, at approximately 7:15 PM, Mesa County Search & Rescue (MCSAR) was dispatched alongside Lower Valley Fire District (LVFD) in response to a report of an individual who had fallen in the Colorado National Monument.

Once on scene, our team quickly deployed a hasty team and established a rope system to safely access the steep terrain below the rim and make initial contact with the subject. Within 15 minutes, an MCSAR member rappelled over the edge to provide medical assessment while additional MCSAR personnel constructed a technical rope rescue system. Upon making contact, it was determined that the individual was deceased & the operation transitioned from a rescue to a recovery.

MCSAR then carefully coordinated a high-angle rope operation to lower a litter and litter attendant to the subject, allowing the team to perform the recovery safely and respectfully. Once complete, the litter and attendant were carefully raised back to the top where the deceased was transferred to the Mesa County Coroner.

All teams cleared the field and were out of the area by approximately 9:00 PM.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family, friends & loved ones during this difficult time. We are grateful for the collaboration of all agencies involved in ensuring the operation was carried out safely, efficiently & with care.

In February we had the pleasure of joining the Mesa County Safety Fair inside the Mesa Mall. We educated hundreds of elementary students and the community about the volunteer work of Search and Rescue and best practices when recreating outside! We had a blast and always love a chance to engage with our community!
