Happy 81st Birthday, Pat Conroy!

Today, we celebrate the life, words, and extraordinary legacy of Pat Conroy, a storyteller whose voice continues to resonate with readers around the world.

Pat believed in the transformative power of stories—their ability to heal, to connect us, to challenge us, and to remind us of our shared humanity. Through his unforgettable characters, his fierce love of the Lowcountry, and his unwavering belief in the power of the written word, he gave us stories that will endure for generations.

But perhaps Pat's greatest legacy lives beyond the pages of his books. It lives in the writers he encouraged, the teachers he championed, the students he inspired, and the readers whose lives he forever changed.

At the Pat Conroy Literary Center, we are honored to carry that legacy forward, nurturing the storytellers and stories of tomorrow.

Great praise from a great author!!

Judy Blume writes about WHISTLER, Ann Patchett’s latest, "Such a beautiful, quiet novel, tender, yet funny, with two of the greatest characters she’s ever written - Daphne (at nine and grown up) and her stepfather Eddie. I loved this book and okay, I cried when it ended, but only because I didn’t want to part with the characters."

Join us for a very special event on Sunday, Oct. 11, from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Max F. Wetrich Community Room @ GJPL featuring two Open Book presentations brought to us by CultureALL from Iowa Humanities and sponsored by GCLA with support from the Greene County Community Foundation.

Our OPEN BOOK special presenters are:
#1 DARCY MAULSBY -- "BEYOND THE COMFORT ZONE:
THE POWER OF THE ASSIST IN FARMING AND IN LIFE"
Darcy Maulsby is a 5th generation farmer and Iowa's
Storyteller. She is the author of the rural Iowa history book
"Calhoun County," "A Culinary History of Iowa," and "Dallas
County." Newest books: "Iowa Agriculture: A History of
Farming, Food and Family" from The History Press and
"Classic Restaurants of Des Moines and Their Recipes." She
helps businesses find their "wow" stories to inspire people to
dream bigger, revitalize rural America and change the world

for the good.

#2 SESO MARENTES --"STAYING TRUE TO YOURSELF:
THE JOURNEY OF AN ARTIST & COMMUNITY BUILDER"
Seso Marentes is an award-winning artist and a prominent
representative of Iowa’s Latino community. His personal
experiences and dedication to the community have given
him a wealth of stories to share. Despite dropping out of
middle school, Marentes refused to let that define his future.
He overcame numerous challenges, becoming a life mentor
to many and emphasizing the importance of individual value
and self-discovery. As a father to four children and a mentor
to numerous youths from diverse backgrounds, Marentes is
the only Male Parent Partner in Polk County, where he worked with fathers involved with the Department of Human Services (DHS).

Join us SUNDAY, 10-11-26, @ 2 p.m. for our OPEN BOOK event supported by CultureALL and Iowa Humanties. Event is open to the public at no charge.

We had a great time at the special No School Day Kid Zone at City Park. A fun lunch, games and a lot of activity on the awesome playground equipment! Thanks so much to our volunteer helpers!

No rain today! No school today! Come to our Special Outdoor KID ZONE event today at the City Park in Grand Junction. 11:30 to 1. We will have food....Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, juice boxes, Little Debbie treats *yum* and healthy snack-y stuff like bananas, grapes and carrot slices. All area kids are welcome. Mom's, dad's and all other adults too! Join us at the Shelter House at City Park on Elizabeth Street!
