Did you know?

When a group residential facility does not offer individual mailboxes for residents and more than seven mail ballots are set to be delivered there, bipartisan teams of election judges hand-deliver the ballots to residents before each election.

A bipartisan test board publicly tested Mesa County's election equipment this morning in preparation for the June 30, 2026, Primary Election. One test deck of ballots supplied by the county covered every combination and configuration a voter might choose. Each testing board representative also filled out a test deck for a total of three decks. The decks were tallied and tabulated, totals were verified, and adjudication logs were reviewed. Every test ballot in each of the three test decks was scanned and tabulated with 100% accuracy.

The elections office will be closed on Monday, May 25 for Memorial Day.

What is Logic & Accuracy Testing?

• Logic & Accuracy Testing is state law-mandated testing of election equipment before each election.
• Each county prepares a test deck of ballots that includes every ballot style in the election.
• The county test deck includes a mark for every possible voting combination in each contest, covering all scenarios where voters may select multiple options, as well as overvotes and undervotes.
• The testing board is comprised of one registered Mesa County voter from each major party.
• Testing board members will fill out 25 ballots in any way they choose.
• Testing board members also enter their ballots on ballot marking devices to check the accuracy of the devices.
• A scanner is then used to process both the test decks and the ballots marked by the testing board, confirming that the device reads each ballot correctly.

The Logic & Accuracy Test for the 2026 Primary Election will take place on Tuesday, May 26 at 9:00 am at the Mesa County elections office located at 200 S Spruce Street (west entrance). The public is welcome to attend. Please call 970-244-1662 for more details.

What is a primary election?

A primary election determines which candidates will represent their political party in the general election.

Think of it as a two-stage process. In the first stage — the primary — members of each party vote to choose their party's nominee. The winners of each party's primary then face each other in the second stage — the general election — where all voters choose the final officeholder.

For example, if five Republicans and three Democrats all want to run for county commissioner, the primary narrows it down to one Republican nominee and one Democratic nominee, who then compete in November.

In primary elections, registered Republicans vote in the Republican primary and registered Democrats vote in the Democratic primary. Minor parties also hold a primary election if more than one candidate from their party runs for any particular office.

Colorado switched to a semi-open primary system when voters approved Proposition 108 in 2016, which allowed unaffiliated voters to vote in either the Democratic, Republican, or a minor party primary starting in 2018.

Colorado holds primary elections in June of even-numbered years, followed by the general election in November. This year, the primary election will take place on June 30, and the general election will be held on November 3.
