There's a reason Grand Lake locals will tell you the west side is the best side.

Most people drive through the east side and call it Rocky Mountain National Park. The ones who make it to the Kawuneeche Valley know there's a whole other park over here, and Grand Lake is the front door to it.

If you haven't made it over here yet this summer, this is your sign. Grand Lake sits right at the entrance to this side of RMNP, and trails into the Kawuneeche are some of the most rewarding, and least crowded, in the Park. Plan your visit to the best side at gograndlake.com

Think no one's watching? The aspens beg to differ. ๐Ÿ‘€

Those knots in the bark aren't just beautiful, they've been keeping an eye on this place for generations. Grand Lake, Colorado's forests, meadows, and wildlife deserve our respect and protection.

Carved initials wound the bark and leave permanent scars the tree carries for life. Picked wildflowers never seed. A bear that associates people with food loses the instincts that keep it alive and becomes dangerous to itself and to you. Every shortcut off the trail compacts the soil and kills the root systems underneath.

Grand Lake rewards the people who respect it. Come look. Come explore. Leave it exactly as you found it.

๐ŸซŽ Tiny legs. Big ears. A whole lot of cuteness!

Calving season has arrived in Grand Lake, Colorado and the first moose and elk calves of the year are beginning to appear across the valley.

While these newborns are undeniably adorable, this is also one of the most important times of year to give wildlife plenty of space.
Mother moose are especially protective of their calves and can become aggressive if they feel threatened. What looks like a calm encounter can change quickly when a calf is nearby.
A few simple ways to help keep both wildlife and people safe:
โ€ข Give moose and elk plenty of room. If an animal changes its behavior because of your presence, you're too close.
โ€ข Never approach a calf, even if it appears to be alone. Mothers are often nearby and watching.
โ€ข Keep dogs leashed and under control at all times. Moose often see dogs as predators.
โ€ข Use binoculars or your camera's zoom lens instead of moving closer.
โ€ข Stay on designated trails and avoid blocking an animal's path.
โ€ข If a moose lays its ears back, raises its hackles, or starts moving toward you, back away immediately and put more distance between you and the animal.

The best wildlife encounters happen when animals can continue doing what they do naturally. A little extra space goes a long way this time of year.

Thank you to Bob Kaslik & Steve Kudron for sharing these newborns. Have you spotted any calves around Grand Lake yet? ๐ŸซŽ
