Scam Alert From the Cook County Sheriff's Office

Community members please be vigilant for the last scam. Individuals have been receiving text messages from the North Shore Federal Credit Union (NSFCU) reporting a fraud alert. The messages ask “did you authorize this” however, once you start answering yes or no the scam is able to replicate the actual NSFCU number and start sending standard account verification texts.

We recommend the public to not respond to any text messages from NSFCU- and to immediately call the Credit Union if they receive any texts to verify the validity of it. NSFCU is aware and diligently working on this with multiple law enforcement agencies.

Thank you.

Code RED

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office has taken measures to transition our CodeRED emergency system following a recent cyberattack and data breach that has impacted hundreds of agencies nationwide. CodeRED is a critical notification system used to deliver time-sensitive alerts during severe weather events, public safety threats, and other emergencies.

CodeRED has reported the impacted dataset may contain contact information of CodeRED users such as: name, address, email address, phone numbers, and/or associated passwords used to create user profiles for alerts. If the same password is used by system users for any other personal or business accounts, those passwords should be changed immediately.

During the transition away from CodeRED, Cook County dispatch and partner agencies with emergency alerting capabilities will issue Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAs) on our behalf.

We encourage residents to take the following steps:
• Change any usernames or passwords to other personal or business accounts similar to those used for CodeRED profiles
• Ensure Emergency Alerts are turned ON in phone settings
• Follow Cook County Sheriff's Office and your local public safety agencies on Facebook
• Maintain multiple ways to receive alerts, such as NOAA Weather Radio and local news outlets

The CodeRED provider has decommissioned the current platform. CodeRED has reported there is no evidence that any user information has been used to carry out identity theft or fraud.

That is all we know currently, the Cook County Sheriff's Office does not have any further information.

BEARS!!!!

Please be aware that the bears are trying their best to add winter fat for the long nap. Keep food inside your house, your garbage locked up, don't keep food in your car and please if you see a bear on your property, give it a wide berth. They are doing nothing wrong and humans entice them by being careless and then problems arise.

If you have an encounter and you need public safety assistance, please call 218-387-3030, in emergency call 911.

Be safe everyone and enjoy the Fall!!!
