Another Upper Peninsula service struggling to survive! This seems to be common in our area! Burt Township EMS is affiliated with Alger EMS and receives all necessary funding. But we do need staff!! Our staffing is shrinking and new students are nonexistent! There are already days where the schedule is unfilled and Ambulance response comes from Alger Units in Munising!

Please don’t sit silently! If you can take an EMS class and help us, we need YOU!

Although the process was already started, the dwindling eastern U.P. emergency service agencies are planning to pool resources and make one full-time staffed EMS agency.

Kinross EMS Director Renee Gray sheds light on how it got this way:

Attention residents of Burt Township and surrounding area! There will be a Hybrid EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) class starting in Munising, via the UP Health Systems School of EMT. This hybrid class is a combination of in person training and on line training which reduces the required travel to class. The classes will begin on Oct 17, and will run until May.

Burt Township is in desperate need of additional personnel on our local ambulance. This is a wonderful opportunity to help your community! The class, fees and travel are all covered for you if you choose to help us! You get to be part of a very rewarding organization and make some pocket change when going on call for this volunteer service!

Please consider helping out with our service and your community! Class size is limited, and deadline is coming up fast. You can call Ambulance Coordinator Tina Waldron at 906 387-7025 for further information!

Well another service has fallen to a lack of volunteers! Can our local service be far behind? Our aging service continues to decline in members!

It seems that the local ambulance here in Burt Township is not the only service struggling! This story could very well have the titled: “Burt Township Ambulance has closed its doors”!

A small handful of aging licensed responders have been keeping the service in Grand Marais going now for years with no help on the horizon. A recruiting effort 4 months ago to try and get people to take a free local training program once again yielded zero new members. If volunteers do not come forth the local service here in Grand Marais will be lost.

If you can help to save services such as these please do so!

The town chair people, the EMS and dispatch continue to meet to find a resolution.

GRAND MARAIS: WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Emergency Medical Technician Course - Starts October 8, 2020
The UPHS School of EMT is excited to offer a Hybrid Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Course this fall. Course locations include Marquette and our distant sites. Munising needs 6 students to hold in-person classes there.

The Hybrid EMT program is comprised of both online course work, in-person classroom/practical skills lab, and clinical rotations.
Online course work is completed at home on your own schedule.

The online coursework includes lectures, assignments, quizzes and more. The Hybrid program gives students the flexibility of completing the online portion around their own schedule, while still meeting assigned due dates.

Throughout the program, student will also be attending in-person classroom sessions that will be held on scheduled Thursdays. During these sessions, students will review course material and develop their practical skills.

Students will be required to complete 40 hours of clinical rotation during the course. These hours will be spent at various hospitals and EMS agencies located across the UP. You can do your clinicals at a hospital near you.

Cost of Tuition is $1300 for the EMT program. This does not include the cost of textbook or admission requirements (drug/alcohol screen, health screen/physical, required vaccinations, etc). SEE BELOW

For more information or to obtain an application packet, please contact either Katrina Rushford at [email protected] or Thomas LaTourneau at [email protected]

COURSE EXPENSES: Between Alger County and Burt Township, funding is available to cover course expenses, including textbooks, vaccinations, etc. This is considered a loan but will be forgiven if the student passes the course and serves on the ambulance corps for one year

The 4th of July Holiday will soon be here. Please remember what you can do to help keep our EMS crew and others safe during the resurgence of COVID-19. Unlike many communities we are still having our 4th of July parade as well as fireworks!

We would like to remind everyone to maintain social distance by keeping a minimum of 6 feet between your family and other groups. Please wear a mask where necessary, and sanitize properly.

Enjoy your holiday weekend and be safe while celebrating our country’s independence!

We ask for your support for this Alger County Ambulance Millage for March 10th, 2020. Alger County has operated under the same millage amount for the past 40 years, with many advancements made since 1980, along with an increased call volume. Many of these advancements listed below include the upgrade to an Advance Life Support Service, addition of 4 transporting ambulances serving county-wide (including Grand Marais), along with 2 non-transporting ambulances. Please read the attached request and if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask! Thank you for your continued support for Alger County EMS.

Yes ! There are critical shortages in small rural communities here in Upper Michigan as well!

For decades, states with a lot of land and not a lot of hospitals have relied on volunteer services to respond to medical emergencies. Today, that system faces collapse.
