DIY Eco-Friendly Vegetable Garden
Cutting old containers into pots and reusing plastic bottles as drip irrigation systems is a clever, low-cost, and sustainable way to grow your own vegetables.
This method is especially useful for small spaces, such as balconies or compact gardens, and helps conserve water at the same time.
By giving new life to everyday materials, you not only reduce waste but also create a productive and eco-conscious garden that thrives with minimal resources.

Container gardening - it can be this easy! Join us this thursday May 7 at 4 pm at the community center to learn more from Master Gardener Don Smith

This is what a $0 container garden looks like when you stop overthinking it — grab baskets from the house, fill with soil, and grow dinner on your porch all summer.
- Line each basket with landscape fabric or burlap to hold soil while keeping every drainage slot open and breathing.
- Group sun-lovers together — tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers need 6-8 hours of direct light so give them the sunniest corner.
- Put lettuce and herbs behind the tall baskets where they catch morning sun but get afternoon shade from the bigger plants.
- Set baskets on bricks or a pallet so air flows underneath and water drains straight through without pooling on the porch.
- Water every morning before the heat hits — baskets dry out faster than pots so check soil daily by pushing your finger one inch deep.
- Feed every two weeks with liquid fertilizer because nutrients wash out fast through all those drainage slots.
- Rotate baskets a quarter turn every few days so plants grow straight instead of leaning toward the sun.
- Toss a tomato cage or bamboo stake into any basket growing climbers — cucumbers and tomatoes need vertical support by week three.
- By midsummer you'll be harvesting salads, stir-fries, and salsa from a setup that cost you nothing but soil and seeds.

Good morning! It's World Book Day! What are you reading today?

Did you know... these gardening tips?
Potatoes don't like tomatoes - they are both in the nightshade family so they compete for nutrients and they attract the same pests and diseases.
Beans love carrots.
Tomatoes like herbs and marigolds.
We learned so much about companion planting during our workshop last Thursday with Master Gardener Don Smith!
If you missed it, stop by the library and pick up one of the handouts Don had for us.
Join us on Thursday May 7 at 4 pm when we learn about joining our companion plants in our container gardens.
If you want fresh produce but don't have space for a garden, don't like a bunch of weeding, and you want your plants available above ground level, Container Gardening is the perfect solution!

Did you know World Book Day is today?
I smile when I see posts asking what we are reading.
Before becoming a librarian, I could never read more than one book at a time.
I guess times change.
I am currently reading Shelterwood by Lisa Wingate. This is a historical fiction novel set in the Winding Stair Mountains of Oklahoma. A mysterious discovery in a cave.
I am also reading The God of the Woods by Liz Moore. This is our book club pick for 3 pm May 6. Also historical fiction and VERY hard to put down. Set in 1970 Adirondacks, at Camp Emerson. The Van Laar family already lost their son, now their daughter is missing. I wonder who is responsible?
And just for fun, a non-fiction by J. Maarten Troost. He has a very interesting way of presenting his "travelogue" type books. This one is called Getting Stoned with Savages. The first book of his I read was called The S*x Lives of Cannibals. These both take place in the extreme South Pacific. Just plain entertaining and enlightening.
So, What are YOU reading ?
