Help GPISD celebrate Educator Appreciation Week May 4-8. There are several ways to show your appreciation to the dedicated educators who have expanded their skill set to continue serving our students even when they cannot see them in person. Make your plan to be ready on May 4.

Opportunities for Appreciation
1. Nominate your teacher for a state-wide recognition at teacherscan.org.
2. Decorate your At-Home Academy workspace, chalk your thank yous on the sidewalk or fence, make signs to thank GPISD educators.
3. Video your “Thank You” in a 4-5 second clip and email to [email protected]. Put THANK YOU in the subject line. The videos will be put to music so you don’t have to speak, just share your signs, sidewalk chalk, or creative silent Thank You. Dancing is encouraged.
4. Send an email or social media shout out to educators who have made a difference in your life. Use the #GPISDeducatorAppreciation #WeAreGPISD

The Native American Conversation took place last Saturday, February 8 at the Reed Center in GPISD. A historical gathering of Nations and Tribes collaborated to provide knowledge on what young people should learn about Native American history, geography, life, contributions, and other strands in the innovative Native American Studies course, the first of its kind in the State of Texas. This course is to be implemented by the Social Studies Department in our district. GPISD leading the charge!

In the future there will be further collaboration among a variety of groups. The goal is to a submit the course standards to TEA by January of 2021.

The following Nations/Tribes were represented in this unique event: Alabama-Coushatta, Caddo, Cherokee,
Chickasaw, Choctaw, Comanche, Euchee, Ft. Peck Sioux, Kiowa, Lipan Apache, Creek, Oglala Lakota, Muskoke Creek, Ojibwa, Otoe, Pawnee, Ponca, Potawatomi,
Seminole, Taos Pueblo, and Ysleta del Sur Pueblo.

American Indian Coordinators from Dallas ISD, Fort Worth ISD, and teachers from those districts attended, as did GPISD officials Dr. Robert Steeber, Dr. Missy Steger, Angela Herron, Kerry Chapman, Susana Ramirez, Pat Lewis, Gloria Carrillo, Dr. Vern Alexander, Linda Ellis, Elna Davis, and Judy Stone-Nunneley. Lanette Aguero (Social Studies Facilitator) and Monica Smith (American Indian Education Program Coordinator) partnered to host the event.

This event was made possible through the alliance formed by the GPISD Social Studies Department, the GPISD American Indian Education Program, the American Indian Heritage Day Organization, and TCU.

It was an inspiring day for all participants! Here are some photos to enjoy.

Honoring American Indian Heritage: This past Saturday, November 9, GPISD's American Indian Education Program sponsored a beautiful event in which all who participated enjoyed themselves and learned from each other. It was a great honor to welcome elders who originally came from New Mexico, and everybody enjoyed breakfast while moving around the three different learning stations. We thank each guest and presenter who attended the event! Here are some photos to enjoy.

The elementary dual language team rocked it at the PACT meeting at Crockett! The session was designed to help reinforce reading at home through the use of kits purchased by Bilingual/ESL Programs. The kit provided, "Danny el perro va a casa," focuses on vocabulary development and includes activities such as talking, drawing, and writing about the text. Parents and children enjoyed working closely with one another as they participated in these early literacy activities. Mrs. Minotti, parent liaison, collaborated with the elementary team to make this event a success for parents and students.

This past Thursday night was our American Indian Art Night. Families who attended had the opportunity to create their own pieces of art as an homage to tribes from the state of Texas. As they worked, participants shared information about the tribes whom they were honoring and to whom they are personally connected. Ms. Judy Stone-Nunneley was our speaker, and she shared different pictures and information about tribal rock art. The session took place at the GP Family Service Center from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.

The Elementary DL/ESL lead teacher meeting took place on November 12 from 4:30-6:30 pm. In addition to exploring the main topic of the meeting--leadership debriefing and reflecting--teachers also received information from Ms. Amy Jurica Hinnant, Program Coordinator for the College of Education & Human Development at Texas A&M, about opportunities to get their master's in education with an emphasis on culturally responsive teaching and principalship, paid by Texas A&M grants. They also had the opportunity to spend time talking and learning about American Indian history and culture.

Enjoy these pictures from the meeting!

Important Notice Regarding Super Saturday:

Due to the severe weather that is predicted for our area this weekend, the Super Saturday event scheduled for September 22 has been postponed. Based on the uncertainty regarding Dr. Cummins’ flight to the Metroplex from his home in Canada, Pearson believes this decision to be in the best interest of the safety of all involved. If you had registered for this session on Eduphoria, rest assured that you will not be penalized for not attending.

Be on the lookout for an announcement about a new date for Super Saturday. We hope that you will attend!
