Community Action is about helping people build stronger, more stable lives.

In 2025, KOOTASCA Community Action helped our neighbors achieve meaningful results. Here is just a sampling of the impact made possible through our programs and partnerships:

• 127 households avoided eviction
• 90 households obtained safe and affordable housing
• 168 children participated in Head Start
• 145 young children improved emergent literacy skills
• 300 individuals improved their physical health and well-being
• 300 individuals improved their mental and behavioral health and well-being
• 205 people increased their skills and knowledge to help improve conditions in our community
• 4,659 households received energy assistance to help keep the heat and lights on

These numbers represent real people, real progress, and the power of neighbors helping neighbors.

Community Action is a collaborative effort from the whole community, and members of all ages!

We’re sending out a huge thank you to the Grand Rapids Cub Scouts Pack 51 for their generous donation of birthday kits! 🎉 Each kit was thoughtfully assembled with great care and kindness for the future recipients, including everything a family would need for a special celebration.

Scouts, because of your service project, children and families in our community will be able to celebrate with a little extra joy and dignity. We truly appreciate the time and effort your pack put into making this project a success.

Join us for lunch today from 11:00-1:00.

Rituals like weekly dinners provide predictable social contact, which is especially important for people who live alone. KOOTASCA hosts weekly programming to help people build social connections and reduce isolation.

Monday Community Meal 4:00-6:00 at 822 NE 5th Ave.
Wednesday Lunch 11:00-1:00 at 811 NE 4th Street.

KOOTASCA was proud to join the 2026 Stomp on Stigma 5K! Together, we walked, ran, roller-skated, and stood up for a future where mental health is talked about openly and without shame.

Mental health and poverty are deeply interconnected. Poverty increases the risk of mental illness by exposing people to chronic stressors like financial insecurity, unstable housing, food scarcity, limited access to healthcare, and social exclusion. These pressures significantly increase the likelihood of depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders. At the same time, mental illness can push individuals deeper into poverty.

Breaking the stigma takes all of us and we're proud to be part of that movement.

Minnesota has officially proclaimed May as Community Action Month.

At KOOTASCA Community Action, we see every day what is possible when communities come together to support one another. From early childhood education and housing services to energy assistance, food access, and community engagement, our programs help individuals and families build stronger, more stable futures.
