For City High Middle School senior Arie Prins, success doesn't happen by accident. It comes from countless miles, early mornings, careful preparation, and a commitment to getting a little better every day.

Nya Neal's day can include biology, physics, golf, research, Michigan Youth in Government, yearbook, STEM education, and a shift at Panera Bread. And her sights are set well beyond high school: Neal wants to become a biomedical engineer and is considering an MD/Ph.D. focused on tissue engineering and regeneration.

For Neal, being a student-athlete isn't about choosing between academics and athletics. It's about managing her calendar in a way that makes it all happen. Some days, that means research. Some days, it's golf. Others involve work or community activities.

Before most students arrive at school, Diane Howie and Arden Hammond are already working through their first commitments of the day. Both City High Middle School students are part of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, and both have chosen to continue their music education—even with already full IB schedules.

Finding time for schoolwork can be one of the hardest parts of her schedule, but she knows it is still a top priority. “My priorities are school, then golf, then working,” Howie said.

“My schedule requires a lot of communication with my teachers,” Hammond said. That same flexibility carries into her other activities. As head lobbyist for Michigan Youth in Government, Hammond is preparing for the Fall Conference.

US News & World Report has released this year’s High School rankings. City is #3 in the state; #60 in the nation.

As we continue to focus on an increased sense of belonging for all scholars, staff and families, we have also increased enrollment, access to our program, and the number of scholars that stay with us start to finish.

Our continued success is a reflection of the hard work of our scholars and teachers. So excited to kick off the 2026-2027 school year next week!

Three Southeast and West Michigan are among the top 100 nationally, which marks a slight decline from the four on last year's list.
