Back-to-school season is just around the corner! As students return to class, the Kent County Sheriff's Office is sharing some helpful tips for drivers to keeping everyone safe – especially when it comes to riding the school bus:

🛑 Red flashing lights + extended stop arm = Stop. Drivers in both directions must stop unless separated by a physical median.
🟨 Yellow flashing lights = Prepare to stop. The bus is about to load or unload students.
🚙 Passing a stopped school bus is a civil infraction punishable by fines, points and possible license suspension under Michigan law.

Bike path update 🚴🏻‍♀️. The Kent County Road Commission recently completed work on Forest Hills Avenue. While the road was closed, the pathway was also repaved. The pathway along Knapp Street, one of the oldest in the community, was also recently repaved. Both projects were funded through the existing endowment funds, which help ensure ongoing maintenance and repairs so the pathways remain safe and well-kept for future generations – without creating a financial burden for them.

. In 1990, the original Knapp Street School was moved to its permanent home behind Township Hall. Built in 1851 and named after Erastus U. Knapp, one of our community’s first settlers, the schoolhouse was relocated to the township property, placed on new foundation and landscaped.

Didn’t get a chance to join us for the July Township Board meetings? Here are highlights:

• Appointed Steven Waalkes and Wayne Harrall to three-year terms on the Planning Commission, and Gergory Timmer and Michael Rothwell to three-year terms on the Zoning Board of Appeals.

• Approved the installation of a new security system to control building access for the Township Hall as well as the two Fire Stations.

• Proclaimed Sept. 28, 2026, as POW/MIA Day in Grand Rapids Township.

• Reviewed the budget and public safety reports for the first half of 2026.

Ticks are on the rise in Kent County, and our friends at the Kent County Health Department are sharing tips on how to help prevent tick-borne illness.

To prevent tick bites, you should:

✅ Protect yourself outdoors by wearing long sleeves and long pants, tucking pants into socks and walking in the center of trails.
✅Use tick repellent and treat clothing and outdoor gear with permethrin.
✅Check your whole body after spending time outdoors, including your scalp, armpits, behind your knees and your waistline.

Early voting for all precincts begins this Saturday (July 25) through Aug. 2 at Township Hall, 1836 East Beltline NE. The polls will be open each day from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

On Election Day, polls will be open 7 a.m.-8 p.m. Find your polling location by referencing your voter card or visiting mi.gov/vote.
