The lake provides a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities for millions of visitors each year. The lake covers 57,900 acres at summer pool, elevation 359 mean sea level, and is surrounded by 1,004 miles of shoreline. Natural conditions at Lake Barkley make it possible for the public to participate in activities such as hiking, fishing, hunting, camping, picnicking, and boating. In addition,

there is a Civil War Monument, historic relics, commercial marinas, public parks and wildlife refuges. The many species of wildlife here, including golden and bald eagles, make bird watching and nature photography exciting pastimes. Lake Barkley is a shallow water lake impounding 118.1 miles of the Cumberland River from River Mile 30.6 above its confluence with the Ohio River to Cheatham Dam (River Mile 148.7). It is the lowermost mainstream project for the Cumberland River System. Barkley Dam was authorized in the River and Harbor Act of 1954. Lake Barkley is located in an area that varies from gentle to moderately rolling hills, typical of scenic southwestern Kentucky and north central Tennessee. It is a beautiful area interspersed with open fields, old growth timber and picturesque bluffs. The lake, in its upper reaches, passes through the site of the famous Civil War battlefield now preserved as the Fort Donelson National Battlefield located in Dover, Tennessee.

Swimming in open water (lakes, rivers, etc.) is more difficult than in a pool. You can get exhausted in a short amount of time and get into trouble due to waves, current, lack of experience, or from overestimating your abilities. Even strong swimmers can drown so !

Drowning doesn’t look like it does in the movies. It can happen with 30 seconds for children and 60 seconds for many adults, and often silently, even close to shore. Around 40% of drownings are witnessed. Most of the time others may be nearby but don’t realize someone is in trouble.

Learn the 4 signs of drowning - head back, mouth open, not yelling or calling for help, and arms slapping the water surface (not waving around). Most importantly, always wear a life jacket to avoid an accident becoming a tragedy.

It’s the season for baby deer at Lake Barkley. Please do not approach or move babies. Just because you don’t see the adult doesn’t mean they have been abandoned. Mothers will leave their young in safe places and return later to collect them. If you move the babies, it could cause issue with the mothers. Take photos and respect the way nature works.

To honor Andy, please wear a life jacket when boating to increase your chances of surviving carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Boaters should use a marine CO detector, seat children in the forward-most seating on a boat, avoid idling and exposure to emissions from other boats, and always maintain fresh air circulation.
