This is very good for our area! Just be sure of your site conditions. Example, NJ Tea prefers sun and avg to dry soil, Spicebush thrives in part sun and Ninebark loves moisture. πŸ¦πŸ›πŸπŸžπŸ¦‹

Most people plant ornamental shrubs that look good in May and do nothing the rest of the year. These eight work every season β€” berries, flowers, nesting cover, and pollinator food from spring through winter.

Viburnum is the anchor. Spring flowers, fall berries that feed thirty-plus bird species, and dense branching that wrens and cardinals nest inside. If you plant one shrub, this is it.

Winterberry holds red berries through January β€” long after everything else is bare. She's the reason cedar waxwings visit your yard in December.

🌿 The ones most people haven't heard of:

Bayberry produces waxy berries that only one warbler species can digest β€” the yellow-rumped warbler. She winters farther north than any other warbler specifically because bayberry exists. The original bayberry candle was made from the same wax.

New Jersey tea fixes nitrogen in the soil like clover does, attracts butterflies all summer, and tolerates drought once established. She's three feet tall and does the work of a tree.

Eight shrubs. Plant three of them and the yard changes in one season 🌱

There is phlox in our region, but unfortunately the large majority of the phlox-LIKE plants you see are this exact non-native invasive problem plant. https://www.cityofgrandville.com/our_community/invasive_plant_info.php

Dame’s rocket is an invasive plant that often gets mistaken for native wildflowers. While it may look pretty, it crowds out native plants that local pollinators and wildlife depend on.

Every invasive plant removed is a small step toward restoring healthy habitat. Native plants belong hereβ€”and they support the bees, butterflies, birds, and other wildlife that make our ecosystems thrive.
