Our SROs Carlson & Whelan can’t wait for back to school! SRO Whelan was in school during mid-August for MSP’s TEAM (Teaching, Educating, and Mentoring) training.

TEAM is a school-based, law-related curriculum taught to grades K-12 by TEAM-trained police officers with the goal of uniting educators, students, and law enforcement officers to help children protect themselves from crime. During the 40-hour training course, officers receive instruction in student/juvenile psychology, classroom management, and public speaking.

In addition to traditional topics like personal safety, how to dial 911, the law and you, and dating violence, the TEAM curriculum has been updated to address the topic of school safety and security including facility assessments, bullying and harassment, cyber-crime, social media use, illicit drugs, and va**ng.

Well, summer isn’t technically over until September 22nd, but school starts tomorrow. We’d like to remind you to be aware of school bus safety. There’s a lot of focus on driver safety but please discuss these tips with your student riders:
Always stay in sight of the bus driver.
Don't hurry off the bus; check traffic first.
Don't go back to the bus after exiting!

UPDATE – August 1, 2026
On Saturday, August 1, emergency response operations on the Grand River continued in the search for the drowning victim.
At approximately 2:00 p.m., the Kent County Sheriff's Office Dive Team located the victim approximately 15 feet out from the western riverbank, about one-quarter mile downstream from where he was last seen in the water.
The victim is an approximately 60-year-old male. His identity is not being released at this time as efforts to notify next of kin are still underway.
The Grandville Police Department extends its sincere appreciation to the Kent County Sheriff's Office Dive Team, Walker Police and Fire Departments, Wyoming Police Department, the Kent County Medical Examiner’s Office and all other assisting agencies for their assistance throughout this incident.

SUBJECT:​​ Possible Drowning in the Grand River

On Friday, July 31, at approximately 12:46 p.m., the Grandville Police Department and Grandville Fire Department were dispatched to the Grand River near the 4000 block of Indian Mounds Drive following a report of a possible drowning.
The initial caller reported that an adult male was attempting to swim across the Grand River when he disappeared beneath the water and did not resurface.
Emergency personnel immediately began an extensive search of the area, which remains ongoing. The public is asked to avoid the area while first responders conduct search operations to ensure the safety of emergency personnel and to allow resources to operate without interruption.
The Grandville Police Department is being assisted by the Grandville Fire Department, Walker Police Department, Walker Fire Department, Kent County Sheriff's Office, Michigan State Police, Georgetown Township Fire Department, and Life EMS.

Phone scam alert - There’s one going around with our phone number being spoofed and “Officer Mark Tyler” asking to verify (aka steal) personal information. We don’t employ an officer by that name. If you have doubts that you’re speaking with an actual officer, politely explain that you’ll be calling our dispatch (616-538-6110) to verify.

While we’re at it - You can’t pay bond with Apple gift cards and our favorite coffee shop doesn’t take crypto, so we won’t be asking for any of that either.
