Over the past week, you've met four remarkable individuals who each took a different path to Clay Fire. One served our nation in the Marine Corps. Another left a successful corporate career to pursue a life of service. One discovered his calling through fire training, while another turned a volunteer opportunity into a lifelong profession.

Different backgrounds. Different experiences. One shared mission.

Together, they strengthen our department, enrich our culture, and help ensure Clay Fire continues to provide exceptional service to the communities we are honored to protect.

Please join us one last time in congratulating Firefighters Braxton Creakbaum, Jared Gerndt, Ben Janowski, and Ben Martin as they begin this exciting new chapter.

Welcome to the Clay Fire family—and thank you for choosing a life dedicated to helping others.

Informal Intro to the Prairie on Monday 6.22 at 6:45pm

Over the past few years, the Harris Township grew a replica of the old Harris Prairie, all six instances of which disappeared over time. We also planted a small Oak and Hickory savannah, reminiscent of one that existed onsite at Elm Road and State Road 23 (aka at one time known as Edwardsburg Highway, and before that an Indian trail).

On Monday June 22nd at 6:45pm, at the new observation area overlooking the prairie, Steve Sass (naturalist) and township representatives will be available to discuss the project and history of the parcel. The prairie should be coming into bloom. Parking is at the park, or across the street at the church, as available. Limited seating is available on rocks, so feel free to bring a chair. Weather-permitting, of course.

Microsoft: We won’t be annexed.

While Harris Township has no official say about whether there is a data center in Granger, its residents will be impacted. A major consideration is fire protection, for which the township is responsible. We’ve talked with Microsoft representatives. Work has begun.

At the time of the re-zoning discussions (May 2024), and repeated multiple times recently, Microsoft representatives assured the township they will not seek, and will not accept annexation into Mishawaka. We take them at their word.

This is critical because annexation changes who is responsible for fire protection, and who receives tax revenues to pay for the many aspects of it.

Our fire department, the Clay Fire Territory, is preparing but has received no new tax revenue. We’ve also identified investments that would help, but have received none to date.
Residents should not assume fire departments are always adequately funded. More on that later.

Note: Harris Township’s two fire stations are 0.8 miles 2.6 miles from the data center location, while Mishawaka’s closest station is 5 miles away. Trustee Lindsay made this and related points when he spoke at a St. Joseph Farms rezoning public hearing in 2024.
