NEW SCAMS ARE IN THE AREA!
Several law enforcement agencies in southwest Minnesota, including the Upper Sioux Police Department, have been receiving multiple reports of scam attempts through e-mails, phone calls, and text messages. Scammers are becoming more convincing in their methods and are often pretending to be law enforcement, government agencies, or even your bank.
WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR:
• Calls or texts claiming you have traffic violations or unpaid fines
• Messages saying you owe money or must pay immediately
• Requests for payment using gift cards, cryptocurrency, or apps
• Caller ID showing a “local” or official number (this can be faked)
WHAT TO KNOW:
Law enforcement will NEVER call, text, or email you demanding payment or asking for personal/financial information.
WHAT TO DO:
• Do NOT respond
• Do NOT send money
• Do NOT click any links
• Hang up and block the number
If you’re unsure, contact your local law enforcement agency or Upper Sioux Police Department directly using a verified phone number. These scams often rely on fear and urgency—don’t let them pressure you.
Below are a couple scams that have been circulating recently via e-mail and text message.
Please be sure to help spread the word and let your friends and neighbors know.
Remember, Knowing is half the battle!
