In honor of Indigenous People’s Day, we’re sharing the history behind Indian Mary Park.
In 1852, Umpqua Joe, a Rogue River Indian established a ferry for miners at the site of what is now Indian Mary County Park. Following his death in 1886, Umpqua Joe’s daughter, Mary Peters took over the ferry’s operations. After filing a homestead application in 1894, Mary was granted a federal land grant for the area across and downriver from the current park. Later known as the Massie Ferry, operations remained active until the 1920s, and its legacy continues to be celebrated at Indian Mary County Park.
Today, Indian Mary Park offers year-round camping and is a prime location for rafting, fishing, picnicking, and disc golf.
