In honor of those who sacrificed for our freedom!

If you’ve driven by Fire and Ice Park in the past day or two, you’ve noticed the Field of Honor. These small white crosses each represent a military member who has passed away. These are arranged every year in honor of Memorial Day, May 25, and is open to the public for viewing.
We hope you join us in honoring those heroic Americans by paying your respects at the Field of Honor. Please remember to maintain social distancing practices and to wear a mask any time you are in a public area.

Today is the last day to respond to the COVID-19 Consumer Behavior Survey.

How are consumer behaviors changing due to COVID-19 and how will those changes impact our local businesses, even as the economy begins to open up?

New Mexico IDEA and economic development organizations around the state designed a consumer-focused survey to help answer this question for our local businesses.

Cave Week 2020

One of the many reasons why El Malpais was set aside, and why we're celebrating it in El Malpais Week, is the lava tubes.

Lava tubes are the legacy left behind by volcanic activity. The oldest lava within the El Malpais boundary is approximately 60,000 years old. These kind of caves form as flowy basalt lava, similar to what is in Hawaii today (see Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park), follows the path of least resistance like a stream of water. Once a hollow channel cools, a lava tube is left behind.

According to Merriam-Webster, a cave is "a natural chamber or series of chambers in the earth...", so lava tubes fall under that category. However, without any kind of way to get in, it's hard to say exactly how many--or how long--the lava tubes at El Malpais are. Where else do you know of that has lava tubes? Or caves in general? Let us know in the comments!

Photo Description: Park rangers wearing helmets navigate around a rubble-covered cave floor towards an opening in the ceiling. Light floods the frame from this opening, also called a skylight.

It's great news that more New Mexicans will soon be eligible for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance – but those funds have not yet come through from the federal government. Announcements will be made when benefits are available in a few weeks.

The Department of Workforce Solutions is setting up its system to process these Pandemic Unemployment Assistances (PUA) claims. There is no need to call the Unemployment Insurance Operations Center at this time, as the Department will announce when PUA claims can be filed.

The State of New Mexico has created a new program called the New Mexico Recovery Fund. The $100 million loan program, approved by the State Investment Council, provides emergency loans to New Mexico businesses with 40 or more employees who have been hit particularly hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. To be eligible, companies must demonstrate they were credit-worthy prior to the pandemic; must indicate the intent to retain as many employees as possible; and must commit to spending at least 80% of loan proceeds within the state. The loans start at $500,000 with interest rates ranging between 3-10%. Visit the website to learn more and start the application process. Sunmountaincapital.com

Disaster assistance

Dear New Mexico Businesses,

As most of you know, the federal stimulus guidelines were rolled out Friday. There is $350 billion allocated to small businesses. However, the SBA told us yesterday during a webinar that you have until June 30, 2020 to access this money but it is on a FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE basis. This money will go quickly and we need to do everything we can to get it to you all.

We encourage you to apply for the Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDL) and the Paycheck Protections Program (PPP). The first is a loan program (loans up to $2M) with a forgivable advance up to $10,000 that can be distributed in 3 days directly to your company; and the second, a larger loan program (up to $10M) has an interest rate of 1% and is deferrable for 6 months.

Companies can apply through the SBA at: https://disasterloan.sba.gov/ela
Or through the SBDC, a SBA resource partner. They are offering instruction and guidance on how to apply.
They have 19 offices across NM and are super helpful.
The site is:www.nmsbdc.org

We can always help at EDD. Our website is: www.go.nm.biz/
It has our hotline and our cell phones. We also have two loan programs which Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham approved and businesses can utilize. There is no time limit on the state programs. Please check out the recorded webinars for help on applying and on marketing for our site below.

Also please register your businesses to be a part of our “BUY TODAY FOR TOMORROW” campaign at:
www.buynmlocal.com
Community members can buy vouchers from local companies to use later when your company is back open.

A great way to get revenue in the door and for people at home to help the business community!

We are in this together and we’re here to help.

Many thanks,
Alicia J. Keyes
