Camels in New Mexico?
You bet!!
The Camels are Coming!πͺπ«
El Morro National Monument will commemorate the US Army Camel Corps of 1857, by hosting live camels on the weekend of September 14th and 15th 2024 from 9:30 am β 4:30 pm daily. Come enjoy historic programming, craft activities and visit the live camels.
The US Army conducted an experiment using camels to survey a wagon road from Ft. Smith, Arkansas to California in 1857. The experiment proved to be successful as camels were well adapted to the arid desert terrain. They could travel long distances without need for water, carry heavy loads, and forage on plants that would otherwise injure pack mules. The camels first passed by El Morro in 1857 heading west. Upon returning east in 1859, Lt. Edward Beale, P. Gilmer Breckinridge, E. Penn Long and F. Engle Jr. Inscribed their names on the base of the sandstone rock known as βEl Morroβ.
