Why are there so few inscriptions from the Mexican period on Inscription Rock?

Control of this region changed from Spain to Mexico in 1821. Then in 1848, Mexico lost the land to the growing United States. Yet during those 27 years of Mexican rule, only one cryptic signature was left on Inscription Rock by “O.R.” in 1836. There are several possible explanations for this. Some undated Spanish inscriptions may have been left by Mexican citizens. Any dated Mexican signatures may have been eroded or obscured by lichens or clay before they were noted by others. Any Pueblo or Navajo petroglyphs from that time are not dated. American traders were not welcome in Mexico, but at least three parties passed through El Morro any way in 1827, 1829, and 1830. They left no inscriptions, perhaps to hide their activities from Mexican authorities.
