The Grapeland Police Department has received questions and concerns regarding the City’s ordinance prohibiting block parties. In an effort to provide clarification and ensure the public has accurate information, the signed ordinance is being provided in its entirety.

The Grapeland Police Department has been made aware of plans for an upcoming block party within the city limits this weekend.

Mass gatherings and unauthorized block parties are prohibited within the City of Grapeland. No permit or authorization has been issued for this event.

There will be an increased law enforcement presence throughout the city this weekend. Any unauthorized gathering will be shut down, and all violations of city ordinances and state law will be strictly enforced. Citations will be issued and arrests will be made when legally warranted.

🐾 National Dog Day 🐾

In recognition of National Dog Day, we are proud to highlight Houston County’s two police K-9s—K-9 Kiler, partnered with Sergeant Key of the Crockett Police Department, and K-9 Ranger, partnered with Lieutenant Bateman of the Grapeland Police Department.

These dedicated K-9s assist law enforcement officers, protect our communities, and help keep Houston County safe.

🚔 GPD ARREST – MULTIPLE CHARGES

On August 20, 2026, a concerned citizen contacted law enforcement regarding a male walking in the middle of the roadway on N. Market Street.

Officers with the Grapeland Police Department responded to the area and located the male, identified as Ricky Allen Stokes. During the investigation, officers learned Stokes had an outstanding arrest warrant out of Amarillo, Texas. The warrant was confirmed, and Stokes was taken into custody.

After being transported to the Houston County Jail, jail staff located a substance suspected to be ma*****na concealed inside Stokes’ pants during the booking process. Stokes then allegedly attempted to conceal the substance inside his mouth before it was recovered by jail staff.

Stokes was charged with:

On Friday, August 7, 2026, at approximately 2:00 p.m., Lieutenant Bateman and Officer Moreton with the Grapeland Police Department attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling on U.S. Highway 287 for a traffic violation.

The driver failed to stop for officers, and a vehicle pursuit ensued. The pursuit came to an end in the 1500 block of County Road 1850.

The driver, identified as Brayden Batts, was taken into custody without further incident and charged with Evading Arrest or Detention with a Motor Vehicle. No injuries to the public, law enforcement personnel, or the driver were reported as a result of the incident.

The Grapeland Police Department would like to thank the Houston County Sheriff’s Office and the Crockett Police Department for their response and assistance during this incident.

All persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

On August 4, 2026, at approximately 5:45 p.m., Lt. Bateman and Officer Moreton conducted a traffic stop for a traffic violation on Washington Street in Grapeland.

A probable cause search of the vehicle revealed methamphetamine and ma*****na.

Julie Chaffin was arrested. The narcotics were seized and submitted for laboratory analysis.

The Grapeland Police Department remains committed to proactive enforcement and removing illegal narcotics from our community. We appreciate the continued support of our citizens as we work together to keep Grapeland a safe place to live, work, and visit.

All persons charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

🚔 Proactive Traffic Enforcement Keeps Our Community Safe

On July 9, 2026, Lieutenant Bateman and Officer Key of the Grapeland Police Department conducted a traffic stop after observing a vehicle traveling 92 mph in a posted 60 mph speed zone.

During the investigation, the driver was arrested and charged with Driving While License Invalid and Possession of a Controlled Substance (Suspected Co***ne).

Proactive traffic enforcement helps improve roadway safety while also providing opportunities to identify other violations and criminal activity that might otherwise go undetected.

The Grapeland Police Department remains committed to protecting our citizens through professional, proactive law enforcement.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

Not every traffic stop ends with a citation.

During a recent traffic stop, Officer Key met a young adult who shared that she is a big supporter of law enforcement and asked if she could take a photo with him. He was happy to say yes, turning a routine stop into a memory she’ll always remember.
