Community Meeting Announcement

The Grass Valley Policy Department would like to invite interested community members to a community meeting regarding our use of automated license plate reader cameras, known better as Flock cameras.

There has been much conversation recently in our community and beyond expressing valid concerns about this technology and how it is used. Our desire is to be transparent about the challenges and concerns regarding the use of these cameras, but also to share success stories about the investigative leads the technology has provided leading to the solving of crimes. We will also readily share about the numerous safeguards that are in place to promote appropriate use and protect against abuse or overreach.

We will hold this meeting on June 10th between 4:00pm and 6:00pm at the Love Building in Condon Park at 660 Minnie Street in Grass Valley.

The meeting will have an informal feeling with multiple officers on hand to interact with community members through conversation.

05/25/2026

This Memorial Day, we honor and remember those who gave their lives in service to our country.

In Grass Valley, that remembrance is felt throughout our community, from Memorial Park to the Hometown Heroes banners along S Auburn Street, recognizing those who have served and sacrificed.

Today, we pause in gratitude.

City administrative offices will be closed today in observance of the holiday. All emergency services will continue to operate as normal.

9:30pm Final UPDATE-

The scene of the collision taken earlier this evening has been cleared by all first responders. The roadway is fully reopened.

The injured juvenile remains in critical condition at this time. Our deepest sympathies are extended to the family as they navigate this event.

We would like to thank CHP - Grass Valley for their tremendous support. While GVPD remains fully capable of thoroughly investigating these complex scenes, we’re grateful this is not something we have to do everyday at this scale. The officers of the Highway Patrol brought their best to our community tonight.

Thank you also to Nevada County Sheriff's Office, Grass Valley Fire Department and the Sierra Nevada Ambulance crew that responded!

While the circumstances and facts are still being compiled regarding this incident, our urge and plea to every member of the community is to always exercise bicycle safety while riding, and when operating a vehicle please remember- our roadways are narrow and visibility ahead can be limited.

Further media request can be made during business hours tomorrow, May 14th. This is the final update on this post.

***INVESTIGATION UPDATE***

The Grass Valley Police Department would like to thank our community for the assistance and information provided following our recent armed robbery investigation. Thanks to tips from the public, investigators were able to identify the juvenile suspect wearing the black shark sweatshirt, which ultimately led to his location and arrest.

The second suspect, who wore a blue face mask during the incident, remains outstanding. We continue to ask the community for help in identifying and locating him. Any information, no matter how small, is greatly appreciated.

Because the arrested individual is a juvenile, no further information regarding his identity or arrest can be released. The police report has been forwarded to Nevada County Juvenile Probation for prosecution review.

Anyone with information regarding the outstanding suspect is encouraged to contact the Grass Valley Police Department Investigations Unit at (530) 477-3188 or [email protected]. Tips may also be submitted anonymously.

Thank you again to our community for your continued support and assistance.

*** ORIGINAL POST***

The Grass Valley Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying two suspects involved in an armed robbery that occurred at a business on Plaza Drive during the early morning hours of April 15, 2026.

At approximately 3:20 AM, two male suspects entered the business wearing dark clothing, gloves, and facial coverings. One suspect was armed with a knife, while the second implied he was armed with a concealed firearm inside a bag. The suspects threatened the store clerk and demanded money from the cash register before fleeing the scene on foot with cash and the register till.

Based on their stature, mannerisms, and clothing, the suspects are believed to possibly be in their late teens or early twenties.

Thankfully, the employee was not physically injured during the incident.

Anyone with information regarding the identity of these suspects or this incident is encouraged to contact the Grass Valley Police Department Investigations Unit at (530) 477-3188 or by email at [email protected]. Tips may also be submitted anonymously.

Please share this post to help us identify those responsible.

Assembly Bill 481 was signed by the Governor on September 30, 2021. It is aimed at increasing law enforcement transparency. In part, it categorizes certain police equipment as β€œMilitary Equipment” and requires agencies to inform their governing body (City Council) and the public that we possess the equipment.

GVPD possesses small unmanned aircraft (drones) and some less-lethal munitions (tear-gas, rubber projectiles, bean-bag projectiles, etc.) that the state has classified as "military equipment".

In the spirit of transparency, the Grass Valley Police Department will host a community meeting to discuss AB481 and to display this equipment. We will have the items available for public viewing and officers will be available to discuss policy and state law that governs their use. All are invited to attend.

The meeting will be held at City Hall, in the Hollander Room (next door to the Council Chambers) on May 14th, 2026; 4:30pm-5:30pm
