Nevada County Resource Conservation District

Nevada County Resource Conservation District We enjoy assisting landowners with questions about their land and its uses.

Resource Conservation Districts (RCD’s) are “special districts” of the state of California, set up under California law to be locally governed agencies with their own locally appointed or elected, independent boards of directors. If we are unable to answer a specific question, we help in finding the experts who can. We share our office and are partners with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) who also provide technical assistance and cost-share programs.

"The plants may get all of the attention, but the soil in your garden is what’s really important. And fortunately, there are things you can do to help it along during the colder months."

When spring hits, you'll be happy you put in the effort.

"Targeted grazing is as old as agriculture itself and it features many approaches today. Orchard grazing. Rotational grazing. Forest management. Solar farm grooming. Lawn care. Conservation. Native prairie disturbance restoration. Horticulture waste removal. The list goes on..."

There might not be a more intriguing fusion of the ancient and the futuristic than the concept of targeted grazing.

"We now encourage appropriate fuels reduction in riparian areas. That said, it can be hard to do logistically. As heavy equipment is not allowed in riparian areas..."

From my favorite Master Gardener, Bonnie Bradt, comes an article on invasive species.

"Our planet is getting smaller. Movement of everything, and everyone, is a constant but unpredictable fact. We either import items from countries all over the world or we fly or cruise on huge vessels, any of which can transport extraneous “passengers” clinging to the sides. Movement of goods and people from one area to another is so common that keeping critters in one country from finding their way to another has become almost impossible.

These “exotics”, defined as a species (or their eggs, seeds, spores etc.) which are not native to their current habitat can often become..."

From our friends at UC ANR...

"Beef Cattle on California Annual Grasslands: Production Cycle and Economics," published in October and available as a free download on the UC ANR Catalog (https://anrcatalog.ucanr.edu/Details.aspx?itemNo=8687 ), describes the seasonal phases of cattle production and the factors that impact ranchers’ financial calculations and management decisions.

"This concise publication walks through annual stock flows and calendar of operations and gives tables for estimating costs, return over cash, and gross income under various scenarios," ...
