Today was the day they were to have said goodbye.
It was the day that family and friends were to gather around 52-year-old Brett McMichael after doctors ended their lifesaving measures.
Instead, the goodbyes will wait until Saturday.

The family is understandably having trouble digesting the unlikeliest of accidents.
They can’t fathom how a good servant who days ago was mowing and trimming the small cemetery behind Juliette (GA) First Baptist Church was crushed by a 6-foot monument while he was working in the cemetery.

The man who served others was rushed to a hospital unconscious.
Brett’s wife Donna had a decision to make.
What a downright heartbreaking decision to make.

Brett’s daughter-in-law Grace McMichael contacted me last night to let me know the family will say goodbye to Brett on Saturday:

“As of Tuesday, our family had made the incredibly difficult decision to remove Brett from life support on Thursday, July 9. However, God, alongside Brett's medical team, had other plans.

“Brett made the selfless decision to become an organ donor.
In honor of that extraordinary gift, the hospital will hold an Honor Walk for him on Saturday, July 11, at 2:00 p.m. (Georgia time).

“What we believed would be Brett's final act of kindness has become something even more courageous, memorable, and heroic.
Through the gift of organ donation, Brett will save and improve the lives of countless people.

“Many of you know that my father-in-law proudly served as a volunteer firefighter for 35 years. He didn't serve because he had to- he served because he genuinely loved helping others.

“Throughout his life, Brett answered the call to save lives, and even in his final moments on this earth, he continues that legacy by giving others the chance to live.

“At this time, we do not know how many recipients will receive Brett's gifts, nor can we share any personal information due to hospital privacy regulations and HIPAA. As we learn more, I will continue to share updates.

“Our family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of prayers, love, donations, kind words, and support during this incredibly difficult time.
Your compassion has meant more than we can express.

“The GoFundMe will remain active to help support Brett's wife, Donna, who is disabled, with hospital expenses, household bills, and funeral costs.

For his entire life, Brett McMichael has given back.
Today, the family is asking that we give back in the form of prayers as come Saturday he will go to Heaven.

The McMichael family remains distraught over a freak accident that will soon result in the loss of Brett.

They are comforted in knowing Brett will soon be seated at the feet of Jesus.

Please keep Brett McMichael and his family in your prayers.

Brett was seriously injured in a tragic accident while volunteering to mow the cemetery at Juliette United Methodist Church. A large headstone unexpectedly fell, leaving him with a severe traumatic brain injury. He remains unconscious, on a ventilator, and is fighting for his life.

Many know Brett as a volunteer firefighter, a man of deep Christian faith, and someone who never hesitates to help others. Here in Butts County, we’ve been blessed to know him as a dedicated employee of Butts County Public Works for the past 21 years.

Brett was also one of Jordan’s co-workers at Butts County Public Works. While he doesn’t live in Jackson, he has been an incredible asset to our community through his hard work, dedication, and servant’s heart. The impact he has made reaches far beyond where he calls home.

To help support Brett, Donna, and their family during this difficult time, Jackson Flower Shop will be hosting a benefit, with 100% of the proceeds going directly to the McMichael family to help with medical expenses and other needs.

Please continue to pray for Brett’s healing, for strength and comfort for his family, and for wisdom for the medical team caring for him.

Weather Update: 3/15/26 - 7:00 PM

In light of most recently observed weather predictions, the Jones County School System will be closed tomorrow, Monday, March 16, 2026. Safety remains our top priority - and our actions will reflect such. While the exact path of the storm remains uncertain, we believe that potentially hazardous conditions tomorrow warrant the decision for closure.

This is not a distance learning day. Given our focus on the needs of the whole child, we are encouraging families to continue discussions on long-term goal setting tied to post-graduation success. It is our shared goal to equip students to be employed, enlisted, or enrolled. What is your child’s preferred pathway? Additionally, create space and time for your children to simply read! This makes a difference. With a focus on high impact practice, we believe that our teachers are our greatest asset and will leverage time during face-to-face instruction upon our return to account for any instructional time lost on Monday.

No athletic or extracurricular activities/practices will occur on Monday, March 16th given the school closure.

For those with scheduled appointments in centralized enrollment, we will contact you to reschedule as quickly as possible.

As we continue to monitor the storm, all official updates, regarding any changes to our school schedule and operations beyond Monday, March 16th, will be shared with our families via Infinite Campus through our mass notification system, posted and timestamped to our website (www.jones.k12.ga.us), and shared via our district page.
