We’re in the home stretch of the 2026 Wild Turkey August Production Survey. This weekend is the last chance this year to spread your wings as a wild turkey community scientist.

Log those last-minute sightings at mefishwildlife.com/turkeysurvey. Every brood you count helps keep Maine’s wild turkey data in tip-top shape, and that's something to stand tall and strut about.

Wide eyes, dirt on his nose... it looks like he got caught with his paws in the cookie jar! What was he up to?

Turns out this skunk was just doing what skunks do best - their share of the yardwork! Skunks work the nightshift to keep bugs at bay in Maine backyards and beyond. They do a ton of work behind the scenes foraging on grubs, wasps, worms, crickets, and grasshoppers. They're on mouse patrol too and even join the cleanup committee for nature's leftovers.

Not a guilty face after all! Best to let him get back to business...

Anyone can be a Maine Deer Spy!

Deer Spy turns wildlife watching into community science and white-tailed deer management. All you have to do is fill out a quick online form to share when and where you see deer anywhere in Maine between August 1 and September 30.

When you see deer, count up the number of bucks, does, and fawns and visit mefishwildlife.com/deerspy to let Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife biologists know what you saw.

Every deer counts, (except for those at the Park), so keep an eye out in your own backyard, or on your next outdoor Maine adventure!

Staff Spotlight!

Jade has been a Wildlife Keeper here at the Park since 2022, with a focus on education and the care of moose, deer, big cats, and turtles. In this role, no two days are ever alike!

Jade's favorite memories as a Keeper will always be caring for orphaned moose calves. It's exhausting work, but being in a position to support their health and well-being is exactly where she wants to be.

Her favorite part of the job is sharing love and appreciation for Maine wildlife with visitors. Her least favorite part is saying goodbye when animals pass away, but it's comforting to know they lived good long lives at the Park when they could not have survived on their own in the wild.

There's no question too silly to ask at one of Jade's Keeper Talks, so bring your best the next time you visit!

Open wide and say “Aaaah” – Teeth teach us a lot about wildlife!

🦷 You are what you eat:
Designed for dining on other animals, carnivores have pointed front teeth and jagged back teeth for grabbing, holding, and tearing. To chew on their plant-based menu, herbivores have sharp front teeth and flat back teeth for clipping and grinding. A bite for every appetite, omnivores have a mixed tooth toolbox to match their taste for both animals and plants.

🦷 Bite-sized clues for who’s who:
Have you ever come across an animal skull and wondered who it was? The number, size, shape, and arrangement of teeth, known as dentition, is a smile for species identification.

🦷 Science you can sink your teeth into:
Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife biologists examine tooth samples from harvested animals to determine the age and s*x of individuals, and health of the population over time. Providing teeth and other biological samples is an often overlooked and important way in which hunters and trappers contribute to wildlife conservation and management in Maine.
