It's National Black Bear Day!

Did you know that Maine has one one the longest-running black bear studies in North America? Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife has been researching black bears for over 50 years! Deep scientific knowledge of the population is the foundation for management practices that keep Maine's bears healthy and sustainable for generations to come.

We hope you'll come learn more about black bears at our upcoming Black Bear Birthday Party – Luvey Turns 10!

Great Scott's Mac Wagon rolls in this Friday, June 5th, as the next guest of our Food Truck Fridays lineup. Think crispy tater tots piled high with creamy mac ’n’ cheese, topped with pulled pork or chicken and finished with your choice of signature sauces. It’s comfort food worth going wild for—stop by and dig in while exploring the park.

Skunks give a lot of warning before they spray. Let’s decode the danger dance:

🦨The Suit: That dapper black and white tuxedo says, “I’m as stinky as I am stylish!”

🦨The Stance: Standing tall, back arched, tail raised- they’re on alert. Back up, or else…

🦨The Stomp: Their front diggers stomp firmly on the ground in an intimidating forward rush while quick hip twists threaten the stinky end. After abrupt slides backward, they quickly assess the threat, then stomp forward again.

🦨The Spray: Those who didn’t take the hint will experience the grand finale.

Safe and respectful wildlife watching always starts with space, even if it’s not a species that sprays! Body language is the best clue for how close is too close.

Today, we honor and remember those who served our country and gave so much so future generations could explore, learn, and enjoy places like this. Bring the family out to celebrate the beauty of Maine and the wildlife we’re lucky to share it with.

Home of the free because of the brave.

Turtles understand the freedom of a protected home—they carry it on their backs. We have all been lucky to have heroes carry that weight for us. In their honor, take time this weekend to appreciate the big and small things around you. The outdoors is a great place to start.

We’ll be open regular hours throughout the holiday weekend, including Memorial Day. Gates are open for entry from 9:30am–4:30pm, and you’re welcome to explore until 6:00pm.
