• The ARPOA sponsors Cedars For the Au Sable; a project dedicated to bringing back cedars to the banks of the river that have been decimated by Whitetail deer.

• The ARPOA generously supports the Crawford Cou

nty Sheriff’s marine patrol to control rowdyism on the river.

• The ARPOA supports conservation groups and efforts on a case by case basis
including Huron Pines and the Au Sable River Watershed Committee.

Michigan is home to some of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the country, and protecting those landscapes matters more than ever. These invasive species can crowd out native plants, disrupt local wildlife, and even create problems around homes and waterways.

PL Removal Day Thursday July 31
It was a great day on the river! We removed 19 bags of the invasive plant from the banks of the Au Sable between Penrod's and Burton’s Landing! Thanks to our 17 volunteers from ARPOA and Headwaters Land Conservancy who spent six strenuous hours on the river in what is normally a 2 1/2 hour float. Special thanks to Suzanne and Mark Ostahowski for providing instruction on identification and removal. Also, thank you to Jim Humes of Penrod’s Au Sable Canoe & Kayak for providing the canoes and transportation once again this year.

PURPLE LOOSESTRIFE REMOVAL DAY JULY 31, 2025

**Join us this summer for the Downtown Grayling to Burton’s Landing float to help stop the spread of invasive Purple Loosestrife on the Au Sable ** Free canoe trip compliments of Penrods ** Tools and instruction provided ** Free lunch and beverages ** Great opportunity to spend time with others who share the same passion for our beautiful river **

Date: Thursday, July 31, 2025
Arrival Time: 9:30 a.m.
Where: Penrod’s Au Sable Canoe and Kayak,100 Maple Street, Grayling, MI 49738

David Smith, former President of ARPOA, will be guiding this tour and provide instruction on how to identify and remove the Purple Loosestrife. The work is fun and rewarding through a simple system of cutting and bagging the stems, flowers and seeds--effective in stunting the plant’s growth, while less strenuous and time-consuming than pulling out the root.

We will be paddling from Penrod’s to Burton’s Landing; approximately five hour total trip time including stops (10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.). Volunteers must be comfortable getting in and out of the canoe as well as wading and standing in the water. Plan to wear waders or closed toe water shoes if wet wading.

You don’t have to be a member of ARPOA to join us. Everyone is welcome!
