Callery pear trees, otherwise known as Bradford pear trees, are becoming nuisance trees. While they don't produce a fruit fit for humans, they do produce a fruit that birds eat, and then distribute throughout their territory. Unfortunately, the trees are beginning to out compete native species all over Kansas.
The Forest Service and Extension are buying back the trees, and offering replacement trees of several varieties! Check this out and see if it's something for you!

There will be three Callery pear buyback events across Kansas in May 2026. These programs will offer replacement trees to folks who sign up and can show proof that they have removed a Callery pear tree from their property.
