🐾 International Working Animal Day – Honoring Our Search & Rescue K9 Partners 🐾

Today, on International Working Animal Day, we recognize the incredible animals whose work changes lives around the world. Established in 2016 by SPANA (the Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad), this day was created to raise awareness of the vital contributions made by working animals and the challenges they face every day. Working animals often perform jobs no machine can replace.

Closer to home, we honor the working dogs who serve in Search and Rescue.

Our K9 partners willingly search through dense brush, rugged mountains, deep snow, heat, and dangerous terrain to help bring missing loved ones home. They work long hours, travel countless miles, train year-round, and remain ready to respond at a moment’s notice.

Behind every successful search is a team of dedicated volunteers who sacrifice weekends, holidays, family time, and personal finances to maintain the training, equipment, veterinary care, and certifications required to keep these teams mission-ready.

Today we celebrate not only the achievements of working animals, but also their welfare, care, and the bond they share with the people who depend on them.

🐕‍🦺 Because every search matters.
❤️ Because every life matters.
🐾 Because our K9 partners are more than working animals—they are heroes.

Fact: International Working Animal Day is observed annually on June 15 and was founded in 2016 to highlight the essential role of working animals and the importance of their welfare. Millions of working animals worldwide support human livelihoods through transportation, agriculture, public safety, and other critical services.

This week, Central Montana K9 was invited to present at the Montana Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons Advisory Council’s annual in-person meeting. We discussed our team’s capabilities and, more broadly, how K9s can serve as force multipliers during search and rescue missions.

In attendance were representatives from Montana Tribal Nations, federal investigators and agents, forensic anthropology experts, Indian Health Service, Unchained, and the Montana Attorney General’s Office.

We also heard from family members of the missing and murdered, including the mother of Hanna Harris, whose tragic murder led to the passage of Hanna’s Law.

We were honored to receive the invitation to speak and are committed to providing continued support and assistance to our Tribal Nation neighbors whenever needed.

In May CMTK9 was invited by the Montana Depart of Justice and Missing Persons Specialist to attend Missing Persons and Unidentified Human Remains Training. Handlers Krystal and Stephanie were able to attend.

We listened to presentations from a local Police Chief, Sheriff’s Department, Montana Burial Preservation Board, Montana DOJ Forensic Science Division: Identification as well as Latent Prints, Montana DOJ Department of Criminal Investigation, Federal Bureau of Investigation: Evidence Recovery and Preservation and The University of Montana Forensic Anthropology Lab.
The information we learned from this training was incredibly valuable! We appreciate Kelly Gillman and Jesse Lamping extending the invite to our team!

The Legislature has charged us with administering the Montana Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons Advisory Council, which works to reduce Indigenous missing persons in Montana. The advisory council recently launched a sponsored license plate and the proceeds go to support that mission.

As Police Week nears it’s close, we would like to take a moment to recognize handler Amanda for her service as an Air Force Security Forces Defender. 🚔💙🚔🖤

National Police Week honors law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Our team holds their memories in our paws and hearts.
