Olivia James in memory of Mr. William Bayard Cutting. It is a historic site, both in horticultural acquiesces and architecture. The Manor House was built in 1886 with an eye toward the Tudor style, and the lands surrounding consist of some of the finest and most extensive plantings Long Island has to offer. We invite you to explore the Arboretum. Originally purchased for $125,000 and consisting of
931 acres the arboretum currently encompasses about 250 acres of landscaped property, out of the total donation from the Cutting family of 690 acres. The arboretum offers beautiful scenery as well as events year round, consisting of varying activities. There are walking trails for every fancy - whether you enjoy trees, flowers, or bodies of water you will find it in abundance here. If you are one of our valued artistically inclined patrons, remember to bring your camera as the varied types of plantings are awe inspiring. Not only do we offer art shows, but the beauty of the arboretum inspires our patrons to create beautiful works of art. We have had many patrons donate their lovely photographs and paintings to the Manor House. We offer concerts and plays seasonally as well, for free, although the parking rate is $8 when in effect. If you are a history lover, you too will find a wonderful wealth of activities within the arboretum. Not only is the arboretum renown for its varied and old horticultural achievements, it also features structures that were built in the late 19th century. Interestingly, the Bayard Cuttings went to Europe during the time of construction of their soon to be summer home, and brought home with them even older pieces from various castles around Europe. There are wooden carvings that date back several hundred years living here, showcased in their original format. We have tours that allow patrons to explore different parts of the Manor House and explain the history behind the family that created the arboretum. Botanist? Horticultural adventurer?
