The Suffolk County Department of Health Services has the following responsibilities:

The Commissioner of Health Services is: required by New York State Public Health Law and the Suffolk County Charter to oversee all health services operations, assess health needs and issues, set public health priorities, and prepares the Community Health Assessment;

The department delivers the following servic

es:

- -programs to eliminate health disparities
among racial and ethnic minorities in Suffolk County;

-- public health protection and disease prevention programs;

-- comprehensive programs to protect and preserve the natural resources of Suffolk County and protect county residents against adverse environmental factors;

-- treatment for individuals with mental illness, mental retardation/developmental disabilities, and chemical dependency;

-- early intervention, pre-school education, and programs for children with special needs;

-- health education programs, to***co cessation classes, and falls prevention programs for the elderly:

-- community-based projects promoting nutrition, physical activity and wellness; and

-- oversight for the county's emergency medical response system.

While thousands of fans are enjoying an incredible opportunity to watch the 2026 U.S. Open Golf Championship right in our own backyard at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, employees from the Suffolk County Department of Health Services are working behind the scenes to keep everyone healthy.

Employees from the Bureau of Public Health Protection were on the course at the start of the tournament to inspect the food stations throughout the grounds. Staff from the Office of Water Resources has been working to ensure clean drinking water was available at the tournament.

We are thankful to this dedicated staff for their vital role in ensuring the safety of all of those in attendance.

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services and Long Island Commission for Aquifer Protection (LICAP) are sharing these tips for residents with lawn sprinklers to conserve water as well as save money:

• Follow an odd or even watering schedule.
• Use a smart controller to optimize lawn watering.
• Add rain sensor to prevent sprinklers from running during a rainstorm.

Employees from the Suffolk County Department of Health Services were out in the community once again helping out local moms and moms to be.

Perinatal Health Services Program employees recently hosted a community baby shower with employees from Northwell Health and the Riverhead Library. Parents connected with other families and learned important information about pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum and newborn care.

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services is sharing an important announcement regarding a recent toy recall due to potential lead exposure.

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission recently warned consumers to stop using Darice “Timeless Minis” red wagons, chairs and watering cans immediately as the product exceeds the lead paint limit, violates the federal lead paint ban and poses a lead poisoning hazard.

Consumers are urged to dispose of these toys immediately and not to sell or donate them.

If a child has been exposed to this specific product and you are concerned about lead exposure, contact a healthcare provider.

Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine and officials from the Suffolk County Department of Health Services announced the opening of the application portal for the third distribution of opioid settlement funds. Funding will be awarded to organizations that provide critical services to combat the opioid epidemic.

Applications will undergo a comprehensive review process by the Suffolk County Opioid Settlement Fund Selection Panel.

The portal will remain open through July 6, 2026. Eligible applicants must maintain a significant presence in Suffolk County and provide services to Suffolk County residents. All awarded contracts will begin on January 1, 2027, with contract terms varying based on the scope of the project.

June 14 is recognized as World Blood Donor Day and it’s a time to raise awareness of the importance of giving blood. Every two seconds someone needs blood, and one pint can save up to three lives.

Blood centers throughout New York State have declared a blood emergency. Overall, there is less than a two-day blood supply available.

All types of blood are needed. Type O negative is especially important because it can be given to patients of any blood type and is often used when a blood type is unknown.

Donors can reach out to the American Red Cross or the New York Blood Center for information on where to donate.

• Swim only when lifeguards are on duty, and if possible, swim with a friend.
• Swim between lifeguard flags.
• Be mindful of your swimming abilities.
• Always check the weather before swimming and monitor tides and currents.
• Learn CPR to be prepared in case of emergency.
