Today's Trivia
"May 13, 1864: On land formerly of Confederate General Robert Lee's estate, Arlington National Cemetery interred its first soldier."
Rochester Democrat and Chronicle

"The estate, known as Arlington Plantation, was originally owned by George Washington Parke Custis (Martha Washington's grandson). Robert E. Lee married Mary Custis in 1831, and they lived there for 30 years before the Civil War. When the Civil War began in 1861, the Lees departed. Because the estate was located on a high hill overlooking Washington, D.C., Union forces seized it for its strategic importance. To ensure the Lees could never return to their home, Union Army Quartermaster General Montgomery Meigs ordered that burials begin on the property. The first military burial occurred in May 1864. Although the U.S. government confiscated the land for unpaid taxes, a Supreme Court ruling in 1882 recognized that the Lees still technically owned it. However, because of the thousands of graves, the Lees' son, George Washington Custis Lee, sold the land back to the federal government in 1883 for $150,000 The mansion, known as Arlington House, The Robert E. Lee Memorial (often called the Custis-Lee Mansion), still stands in the center of the cemetery today, maintained by the National Park."
